Artificial Sweeteners

Am I the only one who is absolutely anti-artificial sweeteners?

Re: Artificial Sweeteners

  • I doubt you are the only one, but I use Splenda in my coffee and do drink diet when I do drink pop.

    Same here.

  • I avoid it in pregnancy, and I try to avoid generally. But I was a diet coke drinker for a long time, and it still tastes good to me. I'm going to try not to stay away after the baby, but we'll see.
  • Probably not. There's lots of people who don't eat artificial sweeteners.

I'm not though - I hate greek yogurt and the regular flavors don't come in flavors that I like so I eat Yoplait Light (but that's the only thing I eat with artificial sweeteners on purpose). I do try to avoid them but I'm not absolutely against them.

  • The chiropractor just sent us some article about how sugar is bad for your body/organs/muscles and artificial sweetener is worse.  I'm not a big sweets person but I do bake with regular brown or white sugar.
  • I wouldn't consider myself anti-artificial sweeteners, but I don't like them.  I can't stand the taste so I try to avoid them.

  • I've had maybe 2-3 things with artificial sweeteners since I've been pregnant - I just don't want LO having that.

But when not pg, I do have diet sodas. They are a good afternoon snack at work. Other than that, though, I kind of avoid them just because I don't like the taste of stuff that's "sugar free". I figure I can handle the 15 calories in a teaspoon of sugar if I want to sweeten a drink like iced tea.

  • I have stayed away from them during pregnancy.  However, pre-pregnancy I was a big diet coke drinker and actually preferred sweet n low over sugar in tea.  That was one of the biggest adjustments for me...and yes, I know that it is not on our banned list.  I just didn't think it was a good idea.
  • I am generally not a fan.  If I want sugar I use sugar.  It I want butter I use butter.  I think that a little (real) sugar or fat is a lot better than chemicals and I would rather have the real thing.  That said, every now and again I will have a Diet Coke.  I actually like the taste better than regular Coke.  I think regular is just toooo sweet.

I am sure there are other things that I eat that have artificial sweeteners in them.  I mean almost any cookie or candy or muffin that you purchase pre-made at a store has them.  But nothing that I eat on a regular basis.

Yay! You're a "pop" girl vs. "soda" like me! Smile

Anyway... I drink diet pop, but other than that I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners, so I avoid them for that reason.

  • No, I'm all the way anti-artificial sweetner. I never drink diet soda, eat yogurt unless it is greek and never eat anything that is labeled sugar free. The one time I did drink diet coke it gave me a terrible stomach ache, same with some sugar free chocolate that I ate by accident.

  • I avoid them most of the time. I would drink diet pop on occasion but once I got pregnant I switched to regular if I absolutely HAD to have soda. Up until last week I was using sugar only in my coffee...then one day I put in splenda and it's been downhill from there. I put in way less than I do sugar and it is still much sweeter. I don't know if I'll be able to go back... :/

  • I don't seek them out, but I also don't avoid them like the plague.  If I have coffee, I will put a few packets of splenda in becuase I prefer the taste and I don't feel guilty.  I don't typically drink any diet sodas or use other types of artificial sweeteners though.

Actually, sweet-n-low is on the banned list - it's saccharin.  Not recommended at all during pregnancy.
I do use Splenda, but that's the most artificial I go.  Even when not pg, I try to avoid other sweetners just because I don't like the taste.

  • I'm big time allergic to artificial sweetener. Instant migraine.

In my head, it's no different than smoking.  I know that's extreme - really extreme.  But you're pumping a bunch of disgusting chemicals into your body.

But then again, we try to stay away from a lot of foods that have preservatives and whatnot.  But there's no way to completely stay away from everything, so you just do the best job you can.  But that's us, I don't expect anyone else to do it or feel the way I do.  It's a personal choice.

I don't get all judgy about people who do use artificial sweeteners, but I'm personally not okay with it.   But then again, some people can't have sugar, so it's a necessity - or lesser of all evils.

    To each their own.

  • I use Splenda in my tea, or Stevia if it's available. I also drink diet Coke when I'm craving one, I regularly drink non-caffeinated sodas both diet and regular (orange, root beer, sprite, etc).
