Does anybody use self tanner? HELP

I'm very pale and looking for a good and fast self tanner that's not streaky. i just remembered we have a black tie event this Saturday and it's not enough time to use my usual Jergens gradual tan lotion. What do you use? Is there a product you would warn against? How tan are you naturally?

Also, do you have any other tips for getting ready for a black tie event?

TIA!

Re: Does anybody use self tanner? HELP

  • I can't recommend a brand, but I have heard that the spray stuff works better.  I haven't tried it though.

  • Go get an airbrush tan.  I know they're a little pricey, but they're well worth it, IMO.  I'm super pale too and they are a total lifesaver for weddings and black tie.

Can they adjust the level of darkness? I don't want to look fake dark. I really don't want to go get it done somewhere because I have a phobia of being next to naked in public. I won't even get waxed anywhere. Can you tell me what to expect if  I was to do it?

  • Get an airbrush tan!  Do not get the machine one though because they take a little practice to get just right!  I know around here the spray tans where someone else sprays you are around 50.00

  • Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer for Medium to Tan Skin Tones is what I have found to work the best.  It goes on in a spray mist and leaves your skin super smooth and soft.  Use it three days in a row for best results.  Make sure you exfoliate first and wash your hands thoroughly after if you rub it in at all.

Edit:  Just realized you already use the Jergens stuff.  Then definitely a spray tan from a salon!

I'm not medium-tan. Would you suggest me buying that one or the one for pale skin? The gradual lotion I have from them is for pale skin and I barely look darker. Maybe I should step it up with a medium?

I'm pale too.  I think the Medium is a lot better.  I didn't like the light stuff.

This tin and what is great about the airbrush is they can control how dark and it will not be streaky. I have had too many pale friends try to do themselves and it was a hot mess. PS have a great great time this weekend!!!!

Thanks diva! I'm sure we'll have a good time Big Smile I'm just hoping I don't look silly. The dress that we decided I'd wear was very cheap ($24) so I'm trying to make it look fancier by making myself look all sexy and such. Huh?

Yes, they can definitely adjust it.  In my experience (I've had them done several places) the girls know what they're doing.  I've never had a problem looking fake dark.  I'm a little shy, but I still get down to my underwear with no bra.  Usually because whatever dress I have to wear is strapless, backless, lowcut whatever.  But you could wear a strapless bra if you wanted.  The stuff will wash out of what you wear, I usually wear black underwear just in case.  (I think they say not to wear like silk or rayon or something...)  It's super quick and painless, just a little cold!!

ETA:  Most places use a formula that has a bronzer in it so you can see where it's going.  Don't get freaked out by the bronzer, the color takes a while to develop and the bronzer washes off in the shower.  The bronzer color is I think a little darker than the final result.

Use Ocean Potion. I'm a super pale redhead and will turn orange if I even look at the wrong make up color. This stuff doesn't streak, it's gradual and light so I don't turn into an oompa loompa. Plus, because it's like regular lotion, you can skip a day or do it more than once a day to get your desired color. I've converted my mom and a few friends and they love it. Also, a trick for your hands; after applying the lotion, wash your hands with warm soapy water, then swipe the back of your hands against somewhere that is still damp from lotion(I use my thighs) so your hands get a bit of color and it doesn't look like you're wearing gloves.

  • I am a fan of airbrush tan. They can adjust the shade so its not too dark for you and it looks great. It will run you about $50 but its well worth it!
  • I know you said you already use a Jergens product, but have you tried this one:
    Product Details

I'm fairly fair skinned and can get a decent tan with this in 3 days. You could apply both morning and night to get a darker tan faster...

I do occasionally spray tan (Mystic tan), but it took a couple times before I felt like I got the hang of the barrier cream. I wouldn't do it before a BT event unless I felt confident I could get the barrier cream right-- hello tanned palms and cuticles!

  • I'm fair skinned but tan pretty well. I love Loreal Sublime Bronze. (gel not spray) There is a bronzer in the tanner so you can see where you are applying it. I've never had a problem with streaks and your skin doesn't look orange.

  • WAAAIIIIITTTT!!!! Trust me on this one!! I was a pro cheerleader for 3 years and the stuff all of the girls use is Loral Sublime! It's the best one out there! I don't know your natural coloring but you can get Dark for a more apparent tan or just get Medium. If you are going to do a spray tan have a person do it manually.. but I will tell you there is still a chance of streaking or discoloration around your nails or mouth and arm pits. I'd stick to the lotion.. you will look more natural.

I streaked with that Jergens gradual tan stuff, but that was when it first came out - maybe it's different now.

I heard that the tanning towels are awesome.  My aesthetician uses and loves them.  I also heard them being touted on the radio when someone was doing a segment about self-tanners.  Apparently they don't make you streaky or orange.

    Good luck!!

I had the same problem with Jergens.

yep you can wear a bra and panties, or some of my friends have a bikini they were. I also have friends that wear bottoms and no top. It is whatever you are comfortable with. Someplaces have a thing that you walk in put goggles on close door and it sprays you from all angles. Or some places has someone that airbrushes you themselves.

You will work that dress with your great figure. Just use some accessories some fab shoes and a bag and you are good to go!!!!!! Can't wait to hear about it!

  • No! It is the strongest self tanning lotion I know of.. so I'd get it now to start it and if you don't like the way you're looking hen stop. I have an Olive complexion but there were girl of all colors on the team that used it.. I never notice anyone looking orange. Get medium though.. since you're super pale. Make sure you shave and exfoliate before using it too.. Good luck!

  • I think I'll be trying that one then. Any suggestions for a good bronzer? I've tried to be tan once before and I only do it for big events, so I really don't want to buy a foundation specifically for this event.

Sorry to bug you with so many questions Emily!

  • Yes--Go get a spray tan (I think the Versa brand is the best if there is a place close to you that has that. Mystic is more common and works well too--They are ALL way better than they used to be!).

In my experience, if your event is Saturday, I would try to go today/tonight.  It might feel a little dark for a day or 2 but by Saturday, it will feel and look much more natural.

    A few tips:

1-I'd go with the lightest one available to start (I do the level 1/clear with the Versa)

2-Before you go, exfoliate all over very well (and shave your legs :)

3-After you go, you won't be able to shower or work out for 12 hours or something so plan ahead.

    Happy Bronzing!
