Please stop swelling!

I gained 5 pounds in 6 days between doctor appts - and he thinks it's all from swelling because my tummy is right on target. It really looks like my right leg/ankle belongs to a 400 pound man! My blood pressure is fine - but he told me to watch my salt intake. So I ate a frozen pizza last night (I listen well) and had 3 glasses of water. Somehow, swelling went down so much, my slip on shoes fit finally in days! I assumed it was all the water. Kept my legs elevated all night - kept water by my bed - and I'm back to balloon leg/ankles. Anyone trying anything different to reduce swelling? It's so frustrating and sore!

Re: Please stop swelling!

  • I feel your pain. I swelled sooooo bad....it got worse after Aidan was born too. Drink quarts of water a day, lot and lots! Laying flat in bed with feet on pillows (have your DH place them for you if they are too heavy to lift) and wrap ice packs around them. The ice feels really good!!! My feet only went down yesterday, they had been swollen for weeks...hang in there! Hope you find relief!

  • My feet are huge - it's kinda funny. My doctor told me yesterday to sit in a reclines position (feet up, laying back a little bit) so that the blood could more easily exit my legs and get back to my heart. Yeah..... I set at a desk for 9 hours a day. Not going to happen. So for now, I'm just trying to love my elephant feet.

  • Oh, and yesterday I had gained 10 lbs since my appointment a week before, so I'm right there with you!

  • My swelling hasn't been terrible but my sisters both had awful swelling. One of their doctors told them to get in a swimming pool up to their neck and stay in for an hour.  It really helped.  You ever notice how you always have to pee after you have been in the pool?  The pressure from the water helps to move that fluid along and it might bring you some temporary belief.

If you have a YMCA in your town or a fitness center with an indoor pool it might be worth inquiring about a vistors pass.

  • I gained 8 pounds in 2 weeks at my last appointment and I freaked out because I had only gained 22 the whole pregnancy at that point. But my doctor looked at my legs/feet and giggled and said, "Hunny, look at how pretty your feet are. It's all fluid." So that made me feel a little better, but I still hate it. I can barely wear any of my shoes :(

  • gah, this is so me, too. It's frustrating! I can barely fit in even my widest shoes in the mornings. :( I'm seriously about to start wearing sandals. In February.

The only thing I've been doing differently than what's been mentioned yet is wearing compression socks whenever I know I'm going to be on my feet!

I did :) I don't even care. It's been oddly warm here this winter so far, so I've been lucky.

  • I walk and stand a lot at work and my feet look disgusting by the end of the day. The only thing I've found that helps even a bit are alfalfa supplements. Weird, I know, but it's alfalfa sprouts in pill form. For some reason they pull the water off and allow me to have ankles again. What's bothering me most is the swelling in my hands and the numbness/ pain it's causing. As far as the weight gain, at least we'll all lose, like, ten pounds in the first few weeks after delivery!
  • This is me! Mine were so bad that my doctor had to take me off work at 36 wks. They are still very swollen and bruised from my shoes. Since being off work though I have taken to just wearing flip flops when I go out - regardless of how cold it is. My feet refuse to fit into my shoes.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I'm gonna try a bath tomorrow after work - I forgot the dr said I could do that. And if the warm weather keeps up here in Pittsburgh - I will be wearing flip flops to the hospital - great idea!
