puffs/cereal

I was wondering, do you give your LO those baby puff things or adult cereal at all? I wasn't sure when they can start having those. Sometimes I know LO isn't really hungry but could use something small and I wondered if she could have those. I actually gave her cheerios yesterday for the first time, but I broke them up into 4 pieces each because I was paranoid. lol

Re: puffs/cereal

  • She's been eating puffs and such since she was 6 months. She does great with them. They are easy and convenient. I started giving her plain cheerios earlier this month as well. Again, super easy. She's tried the little cheeto type baby puffs but I don't like giving those to her very much because it seems like junk food more than the others. She also LOVES the yogurt melts. They taste pretty good actually.

  • Yes, but she's pretty much over them now.  She'd rather have real food (what we're eating).  She tends to throw puffs on the floor or straight up ignore them so I'm probably going to give away any that we have left.

  • Yep, she *loves* Puffs. The whole process of feeding them to herself entertains her a good bit and gives me free time to start dinner or whatever I need to do while she's in the highchair.

  • I bought one can of the banana flavored puffs, but Jonah doesn't care for them. Cheerios, on the other hand, he goes nuts over! I wasn't sure if he could handle them at first, since he only has 3 teeth. I was worried they'd be too crunchy, I guess? But they sort of melt in your mouth the same way puffs do. He loves them!

  • Her first tooth has just started coming in this last weekend. Is it okay for her even though she only has one tooth?

They are really pretty easily disolved in the mouth. E didn't have any teeth when I started feeding them to her and she still doesn't use her tiny fang when she eats them.

I don't think you're giving her enough credit. She'll know what to do with it.

  • Puffs or cheerios are really good hand/eye coordination practise.

We've given Owen puffs since about 7 months. They were small for him to actually get in his mouth before that.

I've also done shredded wheat, but I did soak those in water because they're harder.

  • I agree with the hand-eye coordination comment. They're also great practice at pincer-grasping. It didn't take Jonah long to figure out that they're much easier to get into your mouth if you pick them up between your thumb and forefinger.

  • We have done puffs and crunchies - both being a huge hit. I waited until about 7ish months to start ours (paranoia issues with choking) and his pincher grasp improved SO much. Like PP said, I sprinkle a few on his highchair tray when I'm prepping supper, keeps him occupied for quite some time!

  • Mine loves puffs, yogurt melts, and he's ok with the no salt, no sugar fake cheerios (they taste like cardboard). He makes a chewing motion, but doesn't use his two front teeth. I would start with the puffs - they're pretty easy.

Yup, definitely okay.  A doesn't have any teeth yet and she eats all sorts of finger foods.  Their gums are pretty hard and can mash things up well.

We've been doing puffs since about 7 months or so and they really helped improve her princer grasp quickly.  She really likes them too.  I like the Happy Baby or Plum Organics brands best.  She's also had cheerios and likes those and last night I gave her a few baby goldfish crackers.  I bit the tails off of those at first but then stopped and she could handle them just fine.  I think we'll do graham crackers later this week.

graham crackers are a huge hit in this house. they disintegrate really rather quickly. she loves them.

  • My DS loves his puffs, yogurt melts, cheerios and all of it. He loves tasting what Mommy has too, but his favorite as of late to munch on his own is Ritz crackers, they dissolve and get soft much like the puffs, he does great with them.
  • Ella loves puffs, cherrios, and now goldfish (baby size).  We started puffs before she had any teeth.

  • I give her the dissolvable puffs.  I broke them up in the beginning but one day I looked over and she actually picked them up and popped them into her mouth whole.  I didn't know she could feed herself or that she could have a whole one but she has been full of surprises.  I buy the Happy Baby brand because it is the only one I found that has a veggie one.

  • I've given her some puffs and yogurt melts but I've been feeding them to her. I think I'm just going to try leaving them on the highchair and letting her figure it out.
