Upstate NY Babies

Any Paragard users?

I know we have talked about IUDs before, but now that we are getting close to the finish line with this pregnancy, I am trying to seriously think about my options and what I want to do after this pregnancy. I definitely need a break from being pregnant after this baby. Are there any Paragard users here? Care to share your experience? I like that this is hormone free, as I didn't enjoy being on the pill, but I am not sure I want something that is so "long term" when I don't necessarily intend it to be so. Any other recs to look into?

Re: Any Paragard users?

  • Can I add a question? If you have an IUD how did you give birth? I'm wondering if having a prior c-section would increase the chance of it attaching to the uterus.

  • I don't have Paragard, but I have the Mirena. I have had zero issues and really like it. My period is basically gone, which is the best part, IMO!

I don't know much about Paragard, but with the Mirena it is good for 5 years, but you don't have to leave it in that long. It can be removed at any point if you wanted to get pregnant again.

I had a c-sec and my OB didn't mention that the chances were any higher.

I hadn't heard of c-sec increasing risk of problems, until my Mirena moved out of place.  My dr said that my c-sec scar has caused my uterus to be a bit distorted.  As a result, my Mirena twisted out of place.  He said if we take it out and replace it with another IUD, chances are that it will twist itself again.

  • Ok so I have another question then. I was thinking specifically about Paragard because it is hormone-free. I was on the pill for about 2 years and I hated the way it made me feel, I lost my sex drive, was cranky, etc. Any Mirena users have issues like this or is this specifically a pill thing?

I had the same issue w/ BCP, my sex drive was zero. Then I had the NuvaRing for a bit and it was less than zero (if even possible!) Plus I was always getting yeast infections, so that makes sex pretty much off the table!

Since I've had my Mirena my sex drive is totally back. And I have to say our sex life is better than ever now. (well, maybe not like it was when we were first dating and having sex 3 times a day!)

The Mirena is a really low-dose hormone and it's delivered more locally, so it doesn't get as much in your blood stream.
