Dryer sheet = sadface

I stopped using dryer sheets a LONG time ago and the static recently has been making me INSANE. So I threw one in my last load but now i dont like touching my clothes. What are some good eco friendly alternatives?

  • Don't dry your clothes so long/much/high. It's the over-drying that causes static. Take them out when they're still a tad bit damp.

  • I live in a very dry climate and found that even not drying so much, there was still a lot of static.  We've tried wool dryer balls and vinegar to no avail.  My husband was about to rebel my no fabric softener ruling, sgo we started using Ecover fabric softener.

  • It's funny, I ditched my drier sheets years ago and found that neither H nor I every noticed this difference! Maybe try taking the clothes out sooner? Does your dryer have a cool down setting? Mine are always cold when we take the out and we never have static. I'm not sure if that will help. :-(

    ditto this.

We also use vinegar and wool dryer balls. Our house is soooo dry in the winter time, but we haven't had a problem w/ static-y clothing.

  • This may not be the most EF answer but my husband still uses dryer sheets.  However, he wipes down his work uniform with the sheet after it comes out of the dryer and it NEVER goes in the dryer.  I agree things are still static-y, but I really don't mind.  And it's SUPER dry here.

  • I'd try Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Dryer Sheets, were I you. They have no animal biproducts in them, and they smell good. Haven't had a problem with static or smell since the switch. HTH.

  • I feel like this is always my only suggestion, but pinning a safety pin or two to an article of clothing before you dry really helps. Also, what PPs said about over-drying.

  • Thanks everyone I tried the vinegar trick and its worked well.
