Ok, not really, but they sent home legitimate "report cards" today. I actually have to sign and return it, that's how serious they are about them, even for the toddlers. I had to laugh but it's nice that they try and let you know how they think they are doing in different developmental areas.
Unfortunately DS got an "E" meaning "Experiencing Difficulty" in all of the Social/Emotional points...becoming more independent, separation anxiety fading, imitating behavior, responding to authority (?) etc. These are pretty much the only areas they judged for this age group, so yeah, my kid is flunking. He's just moved into this room and is the youngest and only goes 2 days per week, so I know he just needs more time. Poor kid, all "E"s on his first official report card. Hopefully it stays off his permanent record.
Oh yes, I can even set up a conference if I want to...
Re: My kid is flunking daycare
Are these Day Care providers degreed teachers?
Wow, that's hardcore.
Buuuuuuut why do you have to sign it? Did they send it home with LO and they're afraid he didn't give it to you? lol.
I was an infant teacher in a daycare before I had DD and we even had to do progress reports then. Ours don't sound quite the same as your LO's, but we always found it really awful when they scored low, even if it was an age thing. Our reports were to be used for a year range (ie, 6week old is scored using the same scale as a 11 month old - so obviously the younger the age, the "worse" their score). Can you speak to the teachers about it without setting up a conference? We always made sure to talk to them about it before handing them out so they knew that the scores weren't like pass or fail.
If your LO just moved into this room, I wouldn't worry too much. It is a bummer that he didn't get all A's for his first report card.
Yes, they're all early childhood teachers. It really is an amazing place in terms of how committed they are to learning/nurturing. They call it an Early Learning Center which you would think is a fancy term for daycare, but not at this place. The director is very hands-on with the kids and has full-time employees that are constantly working on the curriculum, planning activities etc. They have different "learning zones" the kids visit each day so they aren't in the same room all day long.

They would definitely talk with me about it (I think the conference option is probably intended more for the older kids in other rooms) but it's all basically things we chat about on a regular basis. The main options for the Social/Emotional categories were Experiencing Difficulty and Secure, he's definitely not Secure with those things just yet. He has major separation anxiety when I leave him, but I still think it's good overall for him to be there 2 days and be around different faces and other kids. Hopefully he'll adjust more before the end of the next "marking period" lol.

LOL at marking period
Too cute!
I agree! He was in a different center from when he was 3 to 8 months old and all it was was "maintenance." The teachers were very nice, but there really was nothing even somewhat enriching going on. They barely even had any toys in the room. The kids in the room who were the same age he is now, were bored out of their heads, they barely even had any toys. I feel I took him out just in time, when he was coming out of the "baby" stage and starting to need much more stimulation.

We get a report card type document twice a year and can have parent/teacher conferences, but they aren't required. We did the conferences the first couple times because we just thought we were supposed to, but we couldn't make it this past time so they just sent the document home. There are probably about 100 items they score for each child and then they write up a couple paragraphs, so it must take the teachers forever.
When we did the conferences they always explained why he had lower scores in some areas and it was typically because he was on the younger side of the age group. I do like the conferences though because it gives us one-on-one time with his teacher to talk more about his development. We talk often during dropoff/pickup, but it's nice to have a time with no children to discuss how he is doing in a bit more detail.
So while I do enjoy the conferences, I still think it's kind of crazy that they do this for such young children. My son's first "report card" was when he was 4 month old.

That was the funniest part to me too! At least I know to expect the next one in June so if he doesn't bring it home I can decide on the proper punishment. MamaSquish, I am in love with your DS' hat in your siggy!!

Well if your kid just moved into the room and only goes two days, I guess I'd expect all "E"s.
Pretty silly though.
