1st Trimester

Bleeding- do I need to go to the doctor?

So I'm 6 weeks along in my second pregnancy (third child- first set was twins). I have been bleeding today- its dark, so I figure its probably okay but never experienced this before. Also, its quite a bit. My first appointment isn't for 2.5 weeks. What's the protocol? Call and try to see my dr tomorrow? Or, just wait it out? Seems weird to just wonder if I'm still pregnant for nearly 3 weeks but what will the dr do? An ultrasound?

Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Bleeding- do I need to go to the doctor?

  • Typically, people go to the ER. I am so sorry you are going through this.

  • It really depends on the situation. If it is dark red (not brown) and a decent flow, I would probably go to the ER. Are you having any pain or cramping with it? If you want to wait until mprning and see call your doctor at that time, then drink lots of water and keep your feet up tonight. But even then, they may just tell you to go to the ER to get checked out. GL!

  • I am 7 wks 4 days, I got home from work today and had some blood.  Knowing that it is common I tried not to panic but did call my dr's answering service.  My first appointment isn't until next week but my Dr called me back.  He told me if I was bleeding like a normal period to go to the ER.  I have no abnormal or intense cramping and it seems to have tapered off, just a very faint tinge of pink after wiping the last time in the bathroom.  He said if I continued to bleed lightly to call the office in the morning to see if they could get me in for an earlier appointment.   He also told me that it could just be the baby burrowing and growing into the uterus and that I should just take it easy and try to relax.  He put me more at ease but I am still nervous so I know how you are feeling.  It can't hurt to call your dr or answering service if it's after hours and see what they say, it made me feel better...

  • Hmm, no cramping- I definitely don't feel I need to go to the ER. I'll see how the night goes.
  • I'd call the dr's line. I think diff dr's have diff preferences. Do you know if you're RH neg or pos? You may need the rhogam shot.

  • going to the ER seems a bit extreme. Call the doctor in the morning. They will probably want you to come in.

  • I'd call the doc in the morning unless you are experiencing a lot of pain. The doctor will likely draw beta and may do an u/s as well to see what's going on. The ER probably won't be able to stop bleeding and if that's the only symptom you have there isn't much they can do that can't wait until morning.
