SLP is pregnant. Question about what to do during her maternity leave

She's due in July. Has anybody had to deal with a big break in therapy? Should we bother starting up with a new SLP for the 6 weeks of her maternity leave or should we just deal with the gap? I'm worried DS will regress a little. I know the first 2-3 sessions with a new SLP are always relationship building so I don't know how much work they'd actually do. DS has Apraxia of speech and has started talking in the past 3 months so it just makes me nervous that he wouldn't have any therapy. Any recommendations of what to do?

  • Is she not planning to have someone take over her clients in her absence?  After all, it may be more than 6 weeks if there are issues prior to/after birth.

  • My DS's SLP is going on maternity leave in 2 weeks.  Next week is his last session with her for 3 months.  She has found a replacement for him through the same clinic.  He will only be getting 30 minutes during that time instead of an hour like now but I figure that some is better than none.

Have you asked his SLP whether she will be finding a replacement?  Also are you sure she is only taking 6 weeks leave and not longer?

  • I asked her today if she was having another SLP take over her clients but she said no. She told me that when she had her first child she had set up another SLP to take over but the parents didn't feel the need to so she never did it, and now she's not going to do it this time. I was sort of shocked because I thought for sure she'd have a replacement. Should I insist she find one for us? I do feel uncomfortable going 6 weeks without therapy. I really love our current SLP and she's worked miracles with DS1, she told me she'd only take 6 weeks but one never knows!
  • She should have planned for a replacement.  I would ask about it now.  At least you have time between now and July for DS to get used to the new therapist; that should make the adjustment period much smoother.

  • Is it through Early Intervention?  She needs to find a replacement.  I only took 4 weeks off of my EI job when I gave birth, but I gave birth totally unexpectedly (well 10 weeks early... I mean I knew I was pregnant, but...) so I did leave families in a lurch for a week or 2 before they could get someone to cover me for a couple weeks.  I would insist or at least maybe have her "make up" the sessions she missed... so come 2x/week for a few weeks when she gets back.
