Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Do you use a blanket for baby?

I was just wondering... When i put lo down at night, he is usually in a sleeper with socks underneath and hand mitts and i usually cover him with a loose blanket from middle of body down and I tuck it in on sides. We keep the house at 73 degrees but his room stays a little colder. I was wondering if I should stop using the blanket. Scared of sids but if so, do you tink the way I dress him will be enough? I have heard people dressing in a sleeper and a sleep sack but worried he will overheat. what do you do?

  • DH likes it cold, the a/c is usually 70-73 and we run our ceiling fan. I put DS in a sleeper and then the swaddle. He also has casts on his legs so he kind of has 3 (partial) layers.

  • Never a blanket. That's my opinion. DD1 was in her toddler bed before we gave her a blanket. And, I still worry.

Until about 3 months, we used long sleeve onsies and sleep sacks.  Then they got a one piece long sleeve and no blanket.

  • We dress DD in a long sleeve onsie and a sleep sack. She moves way too much for a blanket.

  • I do the same as you!

  • If it's a really cold night we put one over her but it's knit and has holes and only put it up to her waist.  She doesn't move much at night and doesn't know how to pull/grab things yet, but once she does we'll stop.

  • I would never use a blanket on a sleeping baby. I do put on over DS when he's napping in his rocker or on the Boppy but I'm always keeping an eye on him. When he sleeps in his crib he moves around a lot so a blanket would be a really bad idea for us. We put him in a sleep sack.

If you swaddle the blanket that is safer, but make sure it's pretty tight so it can't come undone or use a SwaddleMe.

  • Our ac is kept on 72, LO sleeps in a fleece sleeper and then is swaddled to bed.

  • our house is at 66 at night.  DD sleeps in a long sleeved onesie, socks, and a fleece sleepsack.  we have kind of a special circumstance right now because she's in a harness for her hips, so we can't put her in sleepers and I don't put pants on her at night because it makes diaper changes too difficult with the harness.  Once she's out of the harness, we will put her in a sleeper (no onesie or socks) and in the sleepsack.

technically, you can use a light blanket if it's tucked in the sides and one end

  • I put LO in a fleece sleeper, swaddle her with an aden & anais muslin blanket and cover her to about her armpits with the blanket from her bedding set. It's kind of stiff and light, so even if she wriggled under it, it wouldn't fall down on her. It's tucked all the way, and she doesn't move much in her sleep. We keep the house around seventy and our room is a little cooler, so I figured if we would want blankets, then she probably would too.
  • Its wintertime in my state so DD wears a sleeper with long sleeves with attached mittens socks and a tshirt underneath. Then I swaddle her with a thin blanket. We usually keep the heat between 70-75 on auto. Our apartment is chilly!

  • LO sleeps in her rock and play so she cant roll around.  I wrap her like a loose swaddle so her feet are covered and so are her arms but her face is cleared.  Once she moves to her bed we will change things... but she HATES sleepers, so this is the best way to keep her warm and sleeping longer.

This. My DS doesn't like his arms swaddled, so we tuck a blanket around him in the RnP from the armpits down. He doesn't move much yet.
