3rd Trimester

failed glucose test

Just found out that I failed the one hour test and need to schedule the 4 hour test.

Any thoughts? Advice?  I'm kind of bumming as I generally eat pretty well and have gained a normal amount of weight during this pregnancy.

 TIA.

Re: failed glucose test

  • Unfortunately it's not about anything you've done wrong.  It just means your pancreas isn't regulating your insulin well enough. So even though being heavier can increase your odds, how much sugar you eat doesn't make you have GD.  You're going to get it or not.  Hope you have better luck with the 3 hour - a lot of people do! :)

  • I failed the four hour test. I didn't even have to drink the mixture they give you because my fasting blood sugar number was too high right off the bat. I too was bummed. I'm not overweight, I eat healthy I was so confused. It has nothing to do with sugar it has to do with carbs. Gestational Diabetes goes away after you give birth. I had to come to terms with the fact that it was nothing I was doing it was just my body reacting to pregnancy. Some people keep it under control with insulin and some can do it with diet. I'm keeping it under control with diet because I hate needles. It is completely do able. Just remember its not a death sentence and it will go away. :) Only a couple of more months to go and then you can eat what ever you want!
  • Unfortunately anyone can get GD, regardless of weight, age, diet...Just take the next test and follow your doctor's orders.

Just need to clear a few things up...

      1. GD has to do with your placenta, hormones and your body's in ability to process sugars correctly - not necessarily or weight or how well you eat early on or in life.

      2. While you do count/watch CARBS on the GD diet, it really is about sugars (carbs convert to sugar).

      3. Some people can control it with diet, some can't. A fear of needles has nothing to do with one's ability to be diet-controlled. :) I was 110% disciplined with both pregnancies and my body just couldn't do it without a tiny amount of insulin.

  • Don't worry, it's nothing you can avoid. It doesn't technically have anything to do with your weight or what you've been eating. I have GD and I have had amazing sugar readings with just a strict eating schedule. I was so upset when I found out because I thought I was doing something wrong and the Dr. reassured me it was my placenta's fault, not mine LOL. As long as I "follow the rules" I should have an average size baby :) Also, it's common for people to fail the 1 hr but pass the 3 hr. Good Luck!

  • I meant "it has nothing to do with sugar" in the sense that counting sugar on labels doesn't help much. Its counting carbs that can tell you where you stand. I shoudl be a littte more clear. You are absolutely right, it's your body's ability to process sugars that dictate GD not anything else. But being overweight and not eating as healthy as you could are associated with GD. That's why exercising and choosing raw vegetables over chocolate cake can help drastically. But its also like I said before, some women' can keep GD under control with a strict diet and some can only with insulin. All I meant was I am TERRIFIED of needles so I try extra hard to keep it under control with diet and it works for me. At the end of the day all I am trying to convey is that GD isn't a death sentence and there is no use in being bummed or upset until you know more. Cutting back on sugary foods and exercising a little bit more can be just the cure or a little shot here and there with insulin may be just what the Dr. ordered. Its just finding what works for you. :D

  • Thanks for the replies, everyone. You made me feel better.

I didn't mean to be snarky, but as someone who has had GD with two pregnancies (so for a total of 6 months of my life), when I read your post it felt a little mis-informational to me. Yes, I think I just made up that word... :)

I hear SO often: "I'm not overweight and I eat pretty healthy, how could this POSSIBLY happen to me?" which is not accurate as lots of "healthy" people get GD. You can eat nothing BUT vegetables for your first two trimesters and it has no bearing on whether or not you'll get GD.

And yes, some women are lucky and are diet-controlled. But your body requires SOME carbs to survive, so you can only cut back so much and if that's not enough, you need insulin. I can eat 3 scrambled eggs and one piece of whole wheat toast (15g of carbs) and NOTHING else and my numbers were 140+ in the morning. So, I ended up on some insulin. Not the end of the world, as you said.

I try extra hard for the health of my baby, but my body just can't do it. I didn't think it fair to imply trying hard is enough in every situation. You're fortunate that you've been able to so far!

That said, I agree... this is temporary and certainly not the worst obstacle you can be dealt in a pregnancy.
