Austin Babies

Is this crazy? Re: travelling with toddler

So - All of a sudden, DH might have to travel to NYC in 2 weeks for work. I asked if I can come as I have tons of friends out there and tickets are pretty cheap since it's off-season. Then I started thinking if maybe I should bring DD so that my friends can meet her and us adventure around together. Then it led to well, if we're already on the east coast, let's go visit SIL and cousins in Baltimore as that was a trip that we were starting to plan anyway...

The only thing is that the only way I can make this happen financially is if DD flies as a lap child. She'll still be under 2, so can legally, but a) I'll be on my own from Austin to NY and b) I had previously sworn to never fly with her as a lap baby again.

Is it crazy for me to consider? Silver lining is that aside from a stoller and clothes, I won't have to take anything at all with me... We'll rely on public transportation and borrowed stuff in NY and my SIL has everything we would need (carseat included) for Baltimore. FWIW, I could also just go on my own, hang out with friends (and DH when he's not in meetings) and leave DD with my parents. If we do that then we just wouldn't go to Baltimore. For some reason I just thought it would be fun to take DD to NY.

WWYD?!

  • I have flown with DS alone more often than not and while it's, of course, easier to have a second person, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't do it with every kid though--you know yours best. :)

  • Do it!  GO GO GO!  This is why you are going to be a SAHM!  So you can just jetset whenever you want to!  DO IT and take D!  Think of all of the cute bundled baby pics!
  • I'll be the naysayer. I would go but leave DD behind. ATX to NYC with a 22-month old lap child sounds like my idea of hell. I got tired of holding DS last week on our flight from Austin to Atlanta.

Oh totally, once I'm there everything will be wonderful and I have no concerns at all. It's just making it there with her on my lap. : /

  • Really the reason that I'm even considering this is cause a) she can actually sit still for episodes at a time of TV (i'd take my iPad) and b) the child loves wearing headphones. We might actually be able to survive a flight. My legs, however, might not...
  • If she can sit still and stay relatively quiet, I might go for it. DD wouldn't have been able to sit still at that age and it's easier than a little infant with regards to actually holding them since she can sit by herself.

  • Do it.  For sure.  Not like the flight will be fun, but it will be worth it from the sounds of it.  DD is close to your DD's age, and if I absolutely had to, I'd fly with her on my lap right now.  In fact, we have to fly to Houston in March and tickets are insanely spendy, and I was really wishing we would still have that option (she'll be a month over 2 then).

Go!  It sounds fun and you'll manage.

  • Is it JetBlue? You can see if the flight is full when you try to book your ticket ( this how I commute and figure out if the flight is full). If there are lots if seats you will probably get lucky and get another seat--because it's off season.

If you have to make a connection , then hmmm. I dunno

  • Go for it and take your DD with you!  We flew to DC with DD#1 right before she turned 2 (she was a lap child)  and she did great.  It definitely wasn't as hard as I thought it might be.  Heck, she even slept on a couple of the legs of the flight.  We even made a side trip via rental car to Philly.  Easy peasy.  Do it!
