Amniocentesis- Awaiting Results

Hi mommies-to-be...

I had an amnio done yesterday at WHC. I've been a nervous wreck. I'm 23 weeks pregnant and had 3 soft markers for down syndrome on my last u/s. My risk factor went from 1:5,300 to 1:421 (for baby having DS), being that I'm considered "older" since I'll be 35 when I deliver and the soft markers. Has anyone else had one done, how did you feel physically after you had it done and how long did it take before you got the results?

Re: Amniocentesis- Awaiting Results

  • I had one done in my first pregnancy, because our first baby had Trisomy 18.  It's nerve wracking waiting for the results.  Physically I felt fine after a day or so.  I'm pretty sure I had mine done on a Tuesday and had the results on Thursday or Friday.  I can't remember the name, but there is a "fast" version of testing that they can do first to check for Trisomy 13, 18, 21 (Downs), and then the full results (looking at all of the chromosomes) takes more like 2 weeks.

Good luck!  Remember, a 1 in 421 chance for your baby to have DS means you have a 420 in 421 chance that he/she does not.  Stay positive.

  • I have no experience, but I wanted to say good luck and I'm thinking of you.

  • I had one in my last pg when the discovered I had a single umbilical artery.  We had no other soft markers but since I was going to be 36 when I delivered, I wanted one.

I had it done on a Friday and I believe I had the quick results back on Tuesday afternoon.  Full results were about a week later.  Longest weekend of my life!!!

Physically I felt fine afterwards.  I even drove home since we had not planned on having one-this was at our 20wk ultrasound.  Did the amnio right after.  I rested for the weekend but felt fine shortly afterwards.

     Good luck with your results!

  • I didn't have one done, but wanted to say good luck. DD had two soft markers (single umbilical artery and choroid plexus cyst), and I was a nervous wreck until the moment I delivered her. We chose not to have it done only b/c of the potential for it to impact DS too.
  • I had one done with Molly.  Her neck measurement on the NT scan was slightly high and then one of the protein markers came back high as well.  I think that gave us a 1:25 chance for Down Syndrome.  The amnio only pinched like a needle stick and then I was fine the rest of the day.  Like others have said we got the preliminary results back (normal chromosome numbers) within about 5days and then the full results at 2 weeks.  Good luck, it can be so nerve wracking to wait to hear.
  • I had one done since I will be 40 when I deliver. It was horrible waiting for the results, especially since the doctor said that if the nurse calls, everything is fine, but if I heard him in the line, there were problems! Between that and the thanksgiving holiday, it took us over 2 weeks to get the results. So hang in there and remember what PP said, that there is 420 other chances that things are fine. Good luck!
