D.C. Area Babies

"giant baby" (and ramblings)

went in for a check up today (going weekly now) and my OB told me that I'm having a giant baby, lol. They are already estimating that he is around 7lbs right now.

she said that depending on how I'm feeling, she might want to induce at 39 weeks and by then, I might actually be on board with that. But for now, I just want to let him cook until he's ready. Her reasons for wanting to induce is because she's worried about me needing a c-section if we let him get too big, but I'm not a small person and had Warner with no issues, so I think I'm just going to wait. (but I reserve the right to change my mind!)

In the meantime, I've been thinking that I have a UTI because anytime I have to go to the bathroom I get a terrible shooting pain in the bladder area when I stand up. Nope, no UTI, that's just this baby hanging out on my bladder. I was hoping their would be a pill for that.

Anyway, apparently, I'm dilated 1cm already...which scares me a bit because when I went in to be induced at 41 weeks with Warner I was closed up completely. I'm overly worried about going into some crazy fast labor at home by myself with Warner. And I forget how much DH doesn't know (or remember) about all the baby having. When I called him to let him know how the appt went and told him that I'm 1cm dilated, he was like "OMG, do I need to come home now?"...like I'm going into labor or something. Silly DH!

Re: "giant baby" (and ramblings)

  • Since I know which practice you go to, I'd take their recommendation about earlier induction unless you were talking with the new doc who I know nothing about. I only say that because they basically insisted I go to 42 weeks with DD.  Knowing what I know now, I would have pushed harder for induction at 41 weeks.  In the end, DD had to be induced anyway even though my water broke before my induction date.  It wasn't that bad.

  • LOL @ your DH. hugs for you.

how long was your labor with warner? did it move quickly? was the induction without complication and did your body react well? second+ labors do move faster (usually) than for FTMs, but i don't think i'd expect to go so fast that you don't have time to make preparations (unless your first was quick, too).

weight measurements can be off by as much as +/- 2lbs in the latter half of the 3rd trimester. it is actually quite rare for a baby to grow bigger than the mother's body can handle. trust in your body! just read the story about the Iowa woman who birthed a 13lb 14oz baby recently! some women just grow bigger babies, but that doesn't mean their bodies can't birth them. you have a "proven pelvis," your body already knows what to do and how.

re: dilation, this is very common in 2+ moms. the cervix may begin to open well before the baby is ready to come and this has absolutely no bearing on when your baby will actually come. this is why i don't recommend internal exams to measure dilation. they don't tell you anything. you could be opening now and go two weeks "late." you could be closed up tight today and have a baby in your arms tomorrow. you always have the right to decline further IEs. they may be routine but they are not evidenced based and often result in more stress and anxiety in the mother.

  • Eeek! I can't believe you are almost ready to have this baby boy.

As far as the dialation, I remember that I was 1 cm at my 36 week appointment and I didn't have DD#1 until her due date. I went up to 2 cm around week 38 or so and then at the end, I was 3-4cm and she still hadn't made her move. Then, the night before her due date, she decided to go for it.

That sucks about the UTI feeling. There is a lot of pressure in the bladder near the end (and everywhere else). I hope you can at least get comfortable.

  • Ah, the joys of the last month of pregnancy!  Hang in there!

Just to echo what Lindsey said and share a little of my own experience:

    1. With DD#2 I was 1 cm dilated around 37/38 weeks...and she was born 10 days past my due date, so I wouldn't worry too much that the dilation means the end is coming any minute;)

    2. As noted above, DD#2 was not too eager to come out (DD#1 wasn't either, but she came a little sooner--6 days past EDD), but when she came out, she came out fast (active labor was about 6 hours with maybe 20 min of pushing)...and even then I had time.

    3. And with both girls I was told I was going to have a 9+ lb baby in those final weeks...and while they were not tiny kids, neither of them was even 9 lbs--one was just under 8lbs and the other was just over 8 lbs.  Those estimates are not at all accurate at this stage. And as you and pps noted, you have delivered vaginally before, so it's more than likely you'll be able to do it this time around.

Generally speaking, I say go with what feels right at the time...2 weeks is a relatively long time in a pregnancy and IMHO it's pretty hard to make the best choice now for what you want/need in 2 weeks.  You've been through this before, you'll know what feels right to do at the time.

    GL!

  • I can't believe how close you are (because I am secretly in denial that I am even in 3rd tri...)!

As far as the whole baby weight issue, the docs told me at 38 weeks they thought (not based on a u/s or anything, just regular exam) that DS would be 7.5 - 8.5 pounds. He came totally on his own at 39 weeks, and was a little peanut at 6 pounds even. So, yes, boy can they be off!

No fun about the bladder issues - here's hoping for some relief soon!

  • Did they overestimate with Warner too?  They overestimated size with both of my babies both by ultrasound and by feel for my OB. My OB was so sure Molly was over nine pounds he bet the nurses dinner before my repeat c-section. Both times I was told how big my babies were going to be and Maggie was born six even and Molly at seven pounds seven ounces.
  • I can't believe you're so close!  Enjoy this time as a family of three before things get crazier.

I actually had DD the day after my OB said something like "Has anyone else said they think this is a big baby? No?  Maybe it's just the way you're carrying..."  DD was 7 lbs 2 oz at 36 weeks.

  • LOL I had a "giant baby" as well.  When I went for a sono at 32 weeks they said he was almost 6lbs.  I freaked out just a bit!  Then by my 36 week appt I had dialated to 2cm, 37 I was at 3, 38 5cm... and DS was STILL INDUCED!  I checked in for my induction dialated 6 cm but was only 80% effaced.  So look on the bright side... its 1 less cm you have to go, and if your L&D was anything like mine, it will go fast.  I labored for 4 hours and pushed for 45 minutes.
