rssn & purdue (or other may '11 moms)

how much are your babes eating these days?? (rssn- hopefully DS' bottle strike has ended and everyone is healthy??)

baby J seems on the tiny side and i feel like he's not eating as much as he should maybe?? a normal day is around 16oz at daycare and he hasn't been eating much in the way of solids at daycare Sad

Re: rssn & purdue (or other may '11 moms)

  • Dude, he takes 16 oz AT daycare? That sounds amazing. The most either of my kids ever took at daycare was 12 ounces. As long as he's getting about 24 oz a day, you're golden (which would only be another four ounces in the morning and four in the evening/night).

Nope, the bottle strike is in full effect. My parents told me I should stop calling it a bottle strike and start accepting that he weaned himself off bottles at a very young age. ;-) I go to nurse him at lunch and then again right after work, so it's not all that different than he would be getting if he actually were taking a bottle.

So, he nurses at 7ish, again at noon, again at 4, again at 7, and again sometime overnight. I figure even if he's only getting around five ounces per nursing, that's 25 oz for the day. Hopefully it's more than that.

Mine is also tiny. He's long like his sister, but after being sick has dropped into the bottom 5% for weight. He was only 15 lbs, 12ish ounces last week after having lost weight from illness. We're going in for a weight check on Friday to make sure he's back to gaining properly now that his appetite has returned.

He eats 2ish ounces of BM with oatmeal for breakfast, a 4-oz container of baby food for lunch, and then usually another 4-oz container for dinner and/or some finger foods. BUT, this is amazing intake for him, considering before he got sick, he wouldn't eat purees and so he only played with his finger foods before chunking them all on the floor. ;-)

I just try to remember that whole "food for fun in year one" rule--he doesn't *need* solids yet, he's just practicing/getting used to them.

Is J dropping weight? Dropping in %? Is your pedi concerned?

  • ok i was hoping that would be your answer cause i know your little man is on the smaller side as well! i keep reminding myself to ignore daycare's comments on how little he is since (1) the babes in his room are serious chunky monkeys and (2) they're all closer to a year so they are going to be different!

he was in the 80-90 percentiles at 3 months and had dropped to 30-40 percentiles at his 6 month appointment so the pedi said we just need to keep an eye on it. 9-month well check is in two weeks & i have a feeling he'll be low on the charts again (we took him in in december and he was just shy of 17-pounds. i'd be surprised if he's hit 18lbs now that he's mobile).

i've been using water when i make his oatmeal for breakfast since i don't use all that much but i should start using milk/formula for a few extra calories. that is amazing food intake! i'm surprised if he eats 4oz of solids a day, much less in one sitting! i try to remind myself food is just for fun too although it doesn't do much good most days Smile

  • Is this that same daycare that you were struggling with earlier? I can't imagine a teacher making comments about a child's size, especially if it's on the small-size end of the spectrum, ESPECIALLY if he's still above 20% for weight. Ridic.

yup! we have really good days/weeks with them and then i get annoyed again. they comment on him being little in a loving-ish way (there is another child who is 14-months and J's size and they comment on how they're the little ones and they really are if you saw the other kids in these rooms)! it generally doesn't bother me cause i know he's on the small side but i have been worrying about it a bit especially since he's teething and eating less lately (at least i'm pretty sure its the teeth)

i'm really struggling finding a new place. my network here are young marrieds without kids or older folks who have older grown kids... the place that is always recommended is 20-minutes out of the way (so probably 45-min roundtrip out of the way) plus we've been on the wait list for a year so its not an option. and i'm struggling to find a nanny/SAHM situation i'm comfortable with. i'm at a loss!

  • I have been worrying about this too, cause E only takes an ounce at a time in a sippy cup at daycare, and only at snack (am and pm) and lunch.  I see the other kids taking 6 oz in a sitting and start to worry that somehow she's not getting enough.

We just saw the dr yesterday for a rash and she was exactly 17lbs with clothes on.  Her 9 mos check up will be the 20th.  My nursing schedule sounds similar to rssn's during the day but is more frequent at night: nurse at 7am, 12:30, 5:30pm, 8, 11, 1am, 3, 5am.  (She usually skips one of the night time ones, but it varies by night which one.)  The dr. was not at all concerned and said that she was getting what she needed from those night time cluster feedings.  So I'm feeling better about it.

In my non-medical opinion, it sounds like J is doing great!

  • My girl is in the chunky monkey camp and we FF, so I doubt we should compare.

She does a 7oz bottle in the morning, then 21 oz at daycare (3-7oz bottles), then a 6oz bottle before going to bed.   She's also doing 3 jars of food a day (2 at daycare and one at home with us). That's 34oz of formula and 3 jars of food a day.  she's eating us out of house and home.

She's 97% for weight and was just shy of 24lbs when we took her in for an ear infection last Friday.

my arms are tired from carrying her around.

I think I might die if he was up that frequently. When he was sick he was up at 11, 3, 4, and 5 most nights and I was in seriously rough shape.

It's all so relative! By the time DD was 8 months old, she'd been sleeping 12 hours straight for 3 months (no lie). Compared to her, DS is our "rough" sleeper. Ha!

    omg. shut up. Smile

  • DS was in the 25% for weight at his 6 mo appoint, weighing about 16lb 6oz.

I think he eats pretty well though. He nurses in the morning then he gets 3 - 5oz bottles at daycare and 2 - stage 2 foods jars, breakfast & lunch. Then at home he gets a third puree jar and he nurses again before bed he goes to bed.

So i'd estimate about 23 oz of milk a day and 3 jars, except on weekends he usually only gets solids twice.

oh, and i just realized you asked for may moms. DS was july baby, but he's close!

  • 16oz at daycare sounds like a lot to me! At that age, DD was drinking about 5oz between 7-2 and then would nurse when I got there around 2:30, which I'd say was about 5-6 ounces. She also didn't really eat solids, except for fun. I wouldn't worry about it unless you pedi says something. It sounds like just a transitional time to me. We definitely went through that.

  • We have a small guy, too. He's not quite 18 lbs, has been in the 25% pretty much since birth. I nurse so not sure how much he's getting but I offer every 3 hrs or so. He's STTN and i don't feed him the middle of the night so that's why I offer more iften. And holy cow, he eats a TON of purees. Now I'm not sure if we're giving him too much after reading PPs? He'll eat at least 5 oz, 3x a day. I nurse first, then give solids.

omg, how cute is he?? You don't post here enough. I miss those sweet cheeks!

I wouldn't worry about him eating too much purees. If you're offering after nursing, I was always told to keep giving it until they turn away.

Congrats on your great sleeper. I'm glad there's someone else to pull the ire away from me.  Wink

Thx!  Yours are adorable too:) i should prob change the pic since it was from christmas, but that would require getting on the compy, which rarely happens these days!

we only got the sleeping down after a few nights of sleep training hell. Basically it was the pedi telling us he didn't have to eat at night. Music to MH's ears but def not mine. Although I'm now a convert:).
