Weaning question

Sort of astonished that my baby is 1 today! He is ready to be done with our afternoon b-feeding session... It lasts about 3 minutes, and I always end up getting bitten. I'm planning on asking this at his well check next week, but do I just replace that feeding with MILK?! He's had soy milk out of a sippy but no EBM or formula out of a bottle for a long time....

Re: Weaning question

  • Awww, happy birthday, L! I think we started whole milk at 1, so that sounds like a great plan. Hope you guys are doing something fun today!

  • thank you!  hmmm maybe an HEB trip!?  poor guy.

  • Happy Birthday!

I generally replaced feedings with snacks or meals. I didn't want to pump him full of cow's milk (or soy if that had been our choice). His drinking other liquids, including milk, has naturally increased as he weaned but I usually put food and a sippy of water in place of a feeding at that age.

Congrats on making it a year!!

thank you!  I guess I just assumed that since it was a milk feeding that I should replace it with some type of milk...  good to know that isn't necessarily the case!

I really didn't think we'd make it (bfeeding)...

Yeah, the idea is that once he doesn't need your milk anymore (and he's at least a year old), then primary source of nutrition becomes food, not milk, so you don't need to replace BM with milk on an equal basis--it just takes a back seat to real meals.

Great job for sticking with it!!

  • Around 1, DD started eating way more and just not wanting as much milk. I introduced cow milk at 11 months and she took to it instantly. I did 1/2 + 1/2 bottles with BM since I hadn't finished weaning myself and was still pumping (I didn't have the heart to throw away BM). At 1, she went from having milk all the time to 4-5 times a day to now 3-4 times a day. At all other times I gave her water. If she was hungry then snacks. If she asked for milk (she learned to say moo pretty early), I always gave her milk, but didn't want to offer her too much knowing that she needed more calories and diversity in her diet.
  • P.S. DD didn't (still doesn't) take to change very well or easily. Because my milk supply dropped so rapidly, I was way more concerned about her taking to cow milk than a sippy. She'd drink anything out of a bottle and nothing out of a sippy around 1. This might be backwards for L since he's been mostly (all?) on the boob). I didn't really fully make the switch to the sippy till around 15-16 months, and that's also when she started drinking more water/less milk.
  • Seems like a great time to introduce whole milk!  We started at about 11ish months, just supplementing when I couldn't pump enough.

    Happy Birthday Little One!

  • thanks again all!  mooooo
