I wondering if any other newborn mommies have a strategy for dealing with the cluster feedings? On Grover's second night home he wanted to feed for about 4 hours straight, at that point my milk wasn't in so I can understand his hunger/persistance. Yesterday, he wanted to feed constantly from about 5PM-2AM (with minor breaks and some light quick sleeping in between, oh and a BM during almost every feed). I know that you can't "spoil" a newborn or give them bad habits, so I just kept feeding him but by the end he was really just suckling to comfort himself and my nipples paid the price! Around 2 am I was really considering just throwing a pacifier in (we are trying to wait until around 4 weeks to start using one since he is having "latch" issues). I think that I would have handled the feedings better if I had felt better but I think that I overdid myself on Mon/Tues and undid some healing in my stiched up zones, so by last night it was tough to walk and keep sitting/standing. I pulled out the kit from the hospital and definitely put some ice packs and extra strength motrin to good use!
SIGH. At least he slept for four hours after that but I am dreading another attack of the cluster feed! Any advice is much welcomed. TIA!
Re: Cluster feeding, explosive BM, and did a stitch come loose? (oh my)
Here's how it went for us...
The first 2 or 3 nights home with my little guy were HORRIBLE. We were up so long with the cluster feeding that I broke down every night. Although we were told by the lactation consultant that would be the case, it was still very difficult. Once I reached the point of tears, I called DH who would take the baby and somehow magically find a way to cuddle him to sleep for about 3 hours (per doc's orders) when we would wake him to feed again. Usually LO would just fall asleep on DH's chest. After that, he would pretty much stick to a schedule for the day. I think as long as he is in my arms, he knows that's where the food is.
Now, we have found that the nightly cluster feedings are still happening, but are getting much shorter. To deal better, we eat dinner and feed the baby by 8:00. Then, I go to bed for about 3 hours and that helps me be more clear and patient for the first night feeding which typically lasts 2-3 hours. After that first cluster feeding, he is usually out for a few hours, and the remainder of night feedings are typical 30-45 minutes and he is back to sleep.
I don't know what to say about the cluster feedings, because mine is just the same.
About the BM though, it is normal for breastfed babies to have frequent BM until about 4 weeks of age. My LO had more messy diapers than wet but slowed down at four weeks exactly and now has had three BMs since then(now six weeks old). Are the stools still soft, yellowish, and seedy? That's how they should look for BF babies.
I'm sorry about your stitches! I had a 4th degree tear so I understand. It does get better! Have you made diaper ice packs?
