The scene: lunchtime, yesterday.
The actors: myself, another therapist, a couple other people & a medical assistant.
We were sitting around talking about trying out for jeopardy as one of my PhD classmates was just on the show in November. The other therapist has tried to get on the show as have I but to no avail. We start talking about how it's harder to get on Jeopardy than into MENSA. Other therapist (D) reveals he was a member of MENSA but let his dues lapse. Medical assistant (A) then pipes up & asks what MENSA is. We explain it to her & that MENSA is Latin for table. This is where the speshul part comes in:
A: Mensa isn't Latin for table; mesa is.
Me: No, mesa is Spanish for table.
A: Um, no. I'm Latin & I'm telling you mesa is Latin for table. (she's Puerto Rican)
You may be Latina (emphasis on "a"), but you aren't Latin. Latin is a dead language that was used in Europe 2,000 years ago. Spanish is based on Latin, which is why mensa & mesa are so close."
A: :blank stare:
Let me tell you, it was really hard not to LMAO during this.
