Waking up screaming and inconsolable at night

DS has woken up the last couple nights at 6:30 am screaming hysterically. When I go in there is is basically inconsolable. The 1st night, we gave him a bottle that he gulped down. So I figuered I prob need to bump up his ounces and/or be sure to serve him solids 2x per day. So we tried that yesterday and he still woke up this morning at 6:30 on the dot hyterical. This time we offered the bottle and he only took 3 ounces out of his normal 6.

We put him back to sleep both times, but his normal wake up time is 7:30 am and getting up even just an hour earlier is throwing off his mood for a good portion of the day.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Do you think it's night terrors?

Re: Waking up screaming and inconsolable at night

  • My daughter had night terrors between 6 and 7 months, which is considered really young but it happens.  It sounds less likely to be terrors if it is happening in the morning.  When he is screaming, does he seem like he's in a trance and nothing can stop him?  Does he fall back asleep after the bottle?  If it is the first, then it could be.  If he falls back asleep fairly easily then it isn't terrors.  What we were told to do for our daughter was to turn on the lights, take her out of the room, do what we had to to wake her up and get her out of the trance/terror.  Sometimes it took awhile but it worked and she outgrew them after about a month.

  • My DD goes through this every now and then. Everyone has told me its teething. Said she wakes up in pain and doesn't understand why so it scares her. Makes sense because she is usually a crabby mess for the rest of the day on those days.

  • Thanks ladies! He was running a slight fever yesterday - so maybe it is just teething. I gave him a little tylenol last night for the fever and he woke up happy as can be at 7:30 this morning. Hopefully he doesnt suffer from night terrors.
