Feeling your own heartbeat?

Is it normal to be aware of your own heart beat?  There are times when I'm sitting or laying down and I can feel it beating if I'm not concentrating on anything else. I just went to the doctor yesterday and my blood pressure was fine. It's not racing or anything, just beating normally. Anyone else experience this?

Re: Feeling your own heartbeat?

  • Yes, I do all the time! And I can be sitting, laying or even standing. I can even feel it in my lower stomach, which is really weird. I do have high blood pressure issues however and I just always chalked it up to that but I'm not 100% sure.

  • I can too and my bp is fine. I was told that our hearts are beating harder and faster because we are pumping a lot more blood through our bodies. It was a really strange feeling at first- I've gotten used to it now.
  • Glad somebody asked this because last night was the first time this happened to me. I actually laid in bed and was feeling my pulse to make sure it wasn't racing or anything and it wasn't.

    So weird!

  • I'm frequently aware of my own heart beat. Some people are just more aware of the goings on in there bodies. As long as your heart rate and BP are fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I do, practically all the time, and it's annoying! lol.

Its due to all the blood flowing through your expanded veins. When I lay down at night i hear it as well.

  • I think it's pretty normal. I remember before I went for my first OB appointment there would be nights that I felt hyper aware of my heart beating when I was trying to sleep and I thought my blood pressure might be up, but when to my appointment it was actually lower than usual. As PP said, it's just your body accommodating the extra blood volume.

  • I am SO glad someone posted about this! I started noticing it a few weeks ago and I panicked, thinking my heart was racing or something. I only notice it when I lay down but it's very odd.

  • This is so funny because my little 9 year old cousin was trying to feel the baby kick and she said to me, "I can feel the baby's heart beat". I didn't believe her but told her "yeah isn't that cool". I bet she was really felling my heart beat!!

  • I only seem to be able to feel mine when my bp goes up.. I typically have normal bp reads, but sometimes when I get too stressed, I feel it.

  • When I watch my bump to see baby move, or put my hands on lower belly (where he kicks all the time), I always see and feel my heartbeat very easily and I have low-normal BP...totally normal :)
