Acupuncture?

So, now I am thinking about giving acupuncture a try to see if it will help regulate my cycles. Just wondering what treatments typically cost and how often you go. Thanks!

Re: Acupuncture?

  • I've been looking into the same thing. I don't know the exact cost of how often I would go, but the place I would go to has this:

I go once a week, but I'm being treated for more than fertility. I found it got my cycle back on track with the first 2 months, and has settled every cycle since, cleared up hormonal acne, mood swings, cramps, and keeps thing running smoothly.

Here in Canada it can be covered - under my benefits up to $600/year. Each visit is $65, but the initial visit was about $120

Note that not every acupuncturist is great, I've seen three now, but only one makes a real difference, in fact, she's amazing... So shop around if you're not satisfied.

  • I love love love acupucture!  It has been such a huge help shortening my cycle (earlier O and a longer LP), plus has helped me emotionally and dealing with stress.  My first visit was 130 I believe, and each subsequent visit is 70.  I go 1x a week.  My insurance doesn't cover it, but my flexible health spending account does (so basically I can use pre-tax dollars).

As Amy mentioned, not all acupuncturists are equal.  I went to one guy that I really really disliked. He barely asked me anything, smelled like smoke all the time, and the needles always hurt. They would cancel my appt frequently if not enough people were scheduled  or would call me the day of my appt and try to move it up a couple hours.  He didn't want to have to "wait around" for my appt if he didn't have back to back bookings - um hello I have a job, I can't just randomly come in at 230 b/c you want to go home. I wasn't relaxed and found the whole thing incredibly stressful.  I gave up on acu, then a few months later decided to give another place a chance.  They are specifically focued on fertility and the experience was sooooooooo different than the first place.  First of all, I had this massive questionnaire that I had to fill out and they asked a lot of questions.  The husband/wife team had dealt with infertility (and m/c) themselves so they "get it" and are so compassionate.  I felt really cared for, and the needles don't really hurt at all!  They are always asking about how I'm doing, how's my cycle, how are my emotions, etc.  I love it and can't wait for my appts now.  Soo - I said all that to say make sure you like the place, and if not, switch!  There are great providers out there.  GL!

I had a similar experience.  The first time I went and the first accupunturist I went to was not a good experience.  This time around its been a much better experience-so it really does make a difference with who you see!

  • Ditto lavril.  It really depends on the practitioner you have.  The woman I use is amazing.  Her practice is focused on fertility and like lavril there was a long questionnaire that I filled out and then we had a 1.5 hour consultation (which I think was $100 or $150) to go over all of that and she went very in-depth and looked at my chart history (she was really impressed that I had been charting since before TTC) and started to put together a treatment plan.  I pay approx 1800 for 24 sessions plus herbs and she's available by email for any questions and advice as well.  The 24 sessions were supposed to be 2x/week but with my travel schedule and her appointment schedule it stretched longer than 12 weeks.  Now she says I really only need to do a "maintenance" plan which will be two treatments during the follicular stage and one during the luteal phase... including herbs that comes to about 1000 for three cycles...actually that seems like a lot, I'll have to go back and look at the estimate.  If I get pregnant, I'll do weekly miscarriage prevention treatments for the first 8 weeks (about $500-600 for the 8 weeks, no herbs) then I'll be released!  Insurance doesn't cover mine either but I use my HSA for it, which is nice.

I also had a sub while my regular acupuncturist was tending to a family emergency and though he was a nice guy, his style was totally different and much more aggressive w/ the points.  Usually I can barely feel them at all.  Not necessarily bad, just different.

  • I've gone to 2 different acupuncturists and they were very different.  The one I have gone to for the last almost year specializes in fertility.  One of the biggest differences was the first woman I went to (who was very nice) did the same points everytime I was there.  Or at least it seemed like it.  She always did a front and a back treatment every time I went no matter where I was in my cycle.

My current one does different treatments depending on what I tell her I am experiencing, the way my pulse feels, the way my tongue looks and where I am in my cycle.  Typically after O she only does a front treatment and no points on my belly.  She really seems very, very knowledgable.

Cost - when I went to the first one I had a consult and it cost around $120-130.  Then I bought packages for treatment - 6 times and the cost was $360, but that meant the price was $60 per visit, not the regular $75.  I never had a consult with the 2nd place because I started using them through my RE's office pre and post IVF transfer.  They also have a package - 5 sessions for $300, so it also comes to $60 per session.

Good luck, shop around and find someone who really knows fertility issues.

  • I get laser acu (with my chiro) and one of their specialties is women's health.  While m/c and IF are not a primary focus, I have physically feel great so that is worth it in itself to me.  Since I receive chiro services (covered by insurance) I get discounted acu sessions for $10/ visit (normally $25).

  • I'm sure it varies a lot by location.  I paid $150 for my initial visit and it'll be $80 for follow-ups.  I'm going to a specific acupuncture fertility clinic.  Some of the general clinics were cheaper, but I heard great things about the Dr. I'm going to (plus he specializes in fertility) so I figured it was worth the $15-20 extra per visit for that.  He wants to see me once a week.  At this point, I'm willing to try just about anything, so I'm giving it a shot.

Wow - that is an amazing deal!!  I also get chiro services, but mine still costs 70 :(  My place needs to get on board with yours!

  • There is a place that focuses on fertility near our home, so I am thinking about checking them out. I talked to DH about it last night and he feels like it would be worth a try. I am having a screwy cycle this month, so I am going to wait it out and then do some more investigating. Thanks for your responses ladies.
