When did your LO's manage steps (up/down) independently?

I know there must be a range of normal   To go outside, I currently carry them down with one in the ergo and they crawl up the steps to get indoors but it makes me nervous to spot them both on the stairs.

  • Mine are 22 months old and I've been spotting them going up and down the stairs for a long time now, probably at least 6 months.

You have to go with your gut.  I encourage them to climb up and down the stairs b/c I think it's good to develop their strength and motor skills.  But one is a lot stronger and more secure in his footing than the other, so I'm less concerned with him.  You have to just use your judgment.  The more they do it, though, the better and stronger they'll get - just keep in close distance to catch someone if there's an oops moment.  ;)

One of mine seems to do better on the stairs than the other. I spot them going up, on our inside carpeted stairs, but I still carry them going down. They are 14 months, so I'm right there, with my hand on their backs to kind of steady them. It's not my favorite thing to do, so I usually just carry them. They surprise me how easily they get up though!

  • My DD was the same age as your LO's when I was huge pregnant and I started holding her hand on the stairs instead of carrying her. We did it multiple times a day, so she got the hang of it pretty quick.

  • About 17 months we went on vacation and were in a house with stairs. THe boys figured them out pretty quickly but I was no where near comfortable with them alone. Now we have moved into a house with stairs. They used to slide down on their belly's, now they scoot down on their rear ends. I feel OK if I am watching them do it that way without spotting. If they are walking down on their own I hold their hands still. They actually would do just fine with just the rail, but I feel sketched out.
