Picking out gifts for each other?

Max and Lily are turning one this weekend (yikes!). I'm wondering what traditions to start as far as the kids "buying" each other gifts. I can take Griffin shopping to pick out a little gift for the twins, but would that be starting a tradition that would get ridiculously expensive for Christmas? I'm an only child, so I'm new to sibling traditions. We're already just buying a joint gift for the twins this year, because I'm still overwhelmed by all the toys that were added to the house for Christmas.

What do you do in your family?

Re: Picking out gifts for each other?

  • My 4 year old and twins all have their birthday within a month of Christmas, so I too, am in no hurry to buy more toys! It gets very overwhelming!

My brothers and I did buy each other gifts for Christmas and birthdays growing up (we don't now as adults because we buy for the kids). It was always something small, and I guess my parents paid for it (maybe we did as we got older, but I don't remember). I think something small, just something that shows some thought and recognition for that person on their day, is nice. Something little, not expensive. We did Princess t-shirts, a book or two, and music CD's for the car. Stuff like that.

I did get something for my 4 year old to give the twins for birthdays and Christmas, and vise vera from them to her. I didn't get anything from the twins to each other, but they're only one. I will do that when they get older.

  • Also, I didn't let Jenna pick the gifts out because we would be there all day! It was stuff that I wanted to buy anyway, and told her this is your gift to the babies, etc.

When she's a little older, I will let her come up with some ideas, but not yet. I'm pretty sure she would insist that her one year old sisters love My Little Pony and Disney Princesses, and therefore, that's what she should get them!
