Trouble TTC

Intro and Question

My name is Lauren and was on TTC a while ago. After years of trying and frustration my husband and I started to get tested for any possible issues and I stopped reading/posting on the bump all together. It just got to be to depressing. After some cycles of Clomid and progesterone my husband and I are once again going full force into our TTC journey. The only test I did not have during my initial work up was the HSG. Can anyone tell me about their experience? (hopefully it won't scare the beans out of me ha!) My fertility problem currently is hormonal. My progesterone is at a level that will not sustain a pregnancy. Hopefully this HSG will not show any other issues. Let me know if your experience was good/bad/okay etc.

Thanks for any information in advance!

Re: Intro and Question

  • It's not that bad.  I will admit, I had some pain during it but it was so quick..a matter of minutes for the entire procedure.  Afterwards I had a little cramping, but nothing major.  Just make sure to take the recommended dosage of ibuprofen beforehand.  If I remember correctly, 800 mgs.  GL!

I took 800 mgs of Ibuprofen about an hour beforehand and was TERRIFIED.  Even so, it wasn't that bad.  It was not painful, but it was uncomfortable.  It was really uncomfortable for me to have the dye pushed through - it felt very much like something foreign that shouldn't be in my body was moving things around in there.  Haha.  Luckily, that discomfort was the worst of it, but again -  I wouldn;t even qualify it as "pain."  GL!

  • Welcome!

My HSG was mostly just uncomfortable. I did take 800mg (if I remember correctly) of ibuprofen before hand. Afterwards I was crampy for a little while. Good Luck!

  • Mine was not bad at all.  I didn't even know it was happening until it was over, I had just started to feel a bit of cramping at the very end.  I did take 800 mg of Advil before.  Bring a panti-liner as pp suggested.  There isn't that much that comes out afterwards, but there is a bit.  I think the whole thing really depends on the person and the dx.  For me it was nothing, I had paps that hurt more than that.  Good luck & welcome!

  • Thank you guys so much for the info! I will certainly get my premeds in and I will make sure to bring a pad. I think I am more nervous about what they may find than the pain if I were to be honest with myself. Just one more step on this long journey I guess. :)

WOW... I was seriously just about to post the same question, with the same title, but TB being funky and deleted things mid-posting.

    Anywho, HI!

  • Same as all above.  Really the most problems I had (and am still having) is getting the doctors to label it as testing and not treatment so the insurance company covers it.  Test lasted 1 hour with minimum cramping, trying to get the billing correct 3 months now with major head aches.
  • Well, welcome to everyone who is new in this thread.  I hope your stay here is quick!  I didn't have a HSG but I did have a SHG with saline infusion instead of dye.  It's definitely not fun but it's over really quick and you will be glad to have more answers after.  GL.

  • Hi and glad I posted it then so you could see the information. I just spoke with my doctor and it is scheduled for next week Tuesday. He did mention I would need to be on an antibiotic starting the day before (I am waiting on the rest of the details like for how long and exact time of the procedure) but it is to prevent a UTI. Never would have thought about that but I am so focused on getting answers about why it is taking so long I guess I just was not thinking past that haha.
  • Everyone else answered the HSG questions, I just wanted to throw in..

Make sure you are also being monitored if you are going to take Clomid again. You should be having mid-cycle ultrasound to check follicle count and size.

  • I do not know if I will do clomid again. My ovaries and eggs are healthy. It seems to be that my hormones are the reason I can't carry a baby. So I am really unsure if I ever should have been on clomid at all. Thank you for that information though I never had any ultra sound after/during my clomid and that was with a fertility specialist (actually the best one in the state) so I am back to my regular (ob)gyn now and he is the one who is guiding me through this new fertility testing and we will decide what to do from there.

  • Welcome to the board.

Definately take the the pain killers they tell you to take.  Mine wasn't too painfull just a few moments where I was like OMG but it went away quickly.  Take a pad with you for the leakage and there will likely have some cramping.  I also had no risk factors for blocked tubes.  My understanding is for people that blockages are found is what causes it to be painfull.
