Question for those who already off work

My original plan was to work until the day before my EDD.  But I'm not sure I can handle it much longer.  I have an hour each way commute that isn't too bad when DH can drive me but that's not always an option.  My question is how did you bring up the topic with your doctor?  If it matters, I haven't had any issues this pregnancy, I have a desk job so I'm not on my feet all day, and I don't have that much longer until my EDD.

Re: Question for those who already off work

  • I am still working for another week but my OB said anytime after 36 weeks is reasonable to quit. I would just mention that the hour commute makes you nervous and that your are feeling the need to stop working. I doubt they will have a problem with it. A desk job doesn't actually mean you have it easy. Sitting for long periods of time can cause swelling. HTH!

  • My doctor wasnt too receptive to it actually, so idk that Id be much help, but once I saw a dr at the hospital and now my high risk, once I started complaining about my aches and pains after work they both offered to write me notes.

  • I'm not sure I understand the question-- Just mention it at your next appointment if the dr doesn't ask. Don't you usually have a time to ask questions? You can always say you feel okay but things like your commute are getting to you, does he/she recommend taking off work now?

My MW asked me last week if I was still working and how that was going. I don't have a commute because I WAH, so I'm working until labor, but driving is painful even as a passanger, so if I had a commute like you do, I'd want out too.

Do you need to talk to your dr.? Can you ask your boss if you can WAH until your baby is born? Does taking off time now affect time you get after the baby is born? These are all important considerations. If I were working in the office now, I'd likely have taken off last week and this week, but I have the vacation time to cover it and it wouldn't affect my maternity leave. As it is, I'm planning to use the extra 10 days I'm saving by WAH up until labor sprinkled as days off throughout the year.

  • Yesterday was my first day not working, but my dr put me on bedrest because of BP issues. I am unbelieveably bored!!! There is nothing on daytime television and i'm not allowed to get off the couch unless I have to pee or get a drink! lol

That being said, I was TOTALLY ready to stop working, I just hope baby gets here soon, then I have more time to be with him, this is taking days off my Maternirty leave...=(

  • I looked at my doctor last week and said "I think it is about time for me to quit working. It is getting too difficult for me to be there on my feet all day with no sleep and my back hurting so much." His response: "Sounds good to me. Ask the girl up front to write your note." It was that simple. The doc gets nothing out of you continuing to work so if you want to be done, tell him and he should be supportive--- I would mention the extreme commute too because it is probably uncomfortable to sit in the car that long. • I am absolutely determined to work up until I go into labor.  I also have an hour commute aswell - which can be scary at times, esp when I'm not feeling well.  But..I just know I'll go insane if I sit at home all day just waiting.  I do have to say though that after a days work I'm useless - I go home, eat and go straight to the couch and usually pass out insanely early.

  • I hope to work until I go into labor, so that I can take the full 12 weeks after the baby is here. That being said, I am working from home today & tomorrow and will probably only work 2 days in the office next week before working from home until he arrives. Is working from home an option for you?

This is me exactly!! I told my husband that I am just so exhausted after a day of work that I couldn't possibly be productive (I have a desk job...I feel like a lazy bum).

  • I started working from home yesterday as DH was really concerned about my long commute on the train/boat.  It is nice to have the option as it does not eat up my 12 weeks of leave and I still have something to occupy my time.  Tad boring not having people to talk to but worth the extra rest.

  • At 34 weeks I was having alot of swelling and pains (on my feet for 8-12 hours at a time) I was also high risk bc I was still losing weight and the baby was small I asked my Dr for a note and he treated me like I  was insane telling me to "tough it out" a week later my boss told me I was in too much pain to work and sent me on a LOA.
  • so i'm actually in the same situation as you-- i asked my doc yesterday, and she said i cooooouuulllddd, she could write me out on fatigue, since i have no real problems. but i still feel very awkward about it- i'm still physically capeable of doing my job, i just hate waking up in the morning and actually doing it, an dmy home-life after work is miserable because i'm just so tired.

i'm going to tough it out for a bit longer though-- if i leave, it's unpaid, and while we don't "need" the money, it's nice to have.

  • I don't know how you're all doing it! I am 38 weeks and have just had my first week off work and it is soooo much better. My job is high pressure and very busy though so I was feeling like I was not as productive anyhow, but geez it feels good to just get body and mind ready in my own time. House to myself! I say don't hesitate in talking to your doc and boss about leaving earlier than planned for mental and physical health reasons.

  • I brought up how hard the hour commute on the subway was getting and my doctor said it was probably time to stop and signed my disability pages.

  • I have an hour drive one way to work as well. I was planning on working thru this week; starting my leave on the 6th but my body had other plans. The doctor took me off work starting last Wednesday b/c my feet looked like Shallow Hals girl and my BP and urine protein were elevated. So, I had no choice in the matter. It feels sooooooooooooooooo much better not working though. My job was getting nearly impossible for me to do.

  • Thanks everyone.  I wish working from home was an option but it's not.  :(  Since I wasn't planning on taking the whole 12 weeks off, only 8 weeks, I was thinking about having them write me out starting Wednesday next week.  I have enough leave to take it all paid, so that isn't an issue to me.  I'll have to talk to my OB and see what she says.
