am i alone here or does this annoy the hell out of anyone else?

Maybe I am just being crazy, but are any of you as annoyed as I am when it comes to people talking to your belly in a "baby" voice? Both my MIL and one of my best friends, keeps "talking" to my belly in these awful baby voices. Is it weird that I really don't want people talking to my DD like that when she is born? My MIL especially has a very nasally and slightly annoying voice to begin with and then to add on the baby talk is enough for me to go insane :)

Thanks for letting me get that out!

  • I feel your pain! The DRs that I go to, I have to rotate through all of the doctors so you get to meet all of them and there is one there that talks in a baby voice to my belly.  Everytime I ask her a question she answers in a baby voice and directs it to my belly.  I am praying that by some miracle she is not the doctor on call when I go into labor Because I may cry and/or punch her if I have to listen to that non stop!

  • That would probably drive me a little nuts.  My mom doesn't do the voice, but whenever she leaves, she says bye to "peanut", too.  It's more silly than annoying.

Ha! We refer to LO as Peanut, but I digress. Yes, that would be very annoying. I'm the only one that talks to LO that way, and I try not to, as it actually isn't good for their speech development. At least that's what I tell people who baby talk by belly. That, and I remind them that he isn't going to talk back.

  • Erm, I'm the worst offender. I talk to him in baby voice all the time on my own.

  • I'm pretty sure my oldest nephew is a "victim" of baby-talk...  he has so much trouble with his speech that he has been in speech therapy for over a year and still having difficulties!  Not only is the baby-talk annoying, and not good for their speech development, but it doesn't do their confidence any good, either, when you're treating them that way.  I see the difference it makes every time I see my two nephews; the oldest is quiet, shy, doesn't like to try new things and has a hard time making himself understood.  The younger one is fearless, so very outgoing and can talk better than his older brother.  They are two years apart so the difference is quite clear!

There are a few people that talk baby-talk to my belly, but I don't see them very often, so I grit my teeth and bear it, although I'll be more on top of it when he's an outside babe.

  • The only person that does this to me is my 6 yr old DD. But, she's 6 years old! lol. Thank goodness I don't know anyone else who does this. That would annoy me too if an adult did that.  =/

  • Baby talk in general annoys me so if someone was doing it to my stomach I would be extremely annoyed. I never got the point in baby talk anyway. H loves to do it, it drives me crazy, he does not care, oh well.

  • That would annoy the ever-living crap out of me.

My OB will sometimes pretend that the doppler allows her to receive walkie-talkie messages from the baby, though, which can be cute and amusing. Like, "Uh huh... okay. What's that? Ah. Your baby says that it's very comfy in there, but he/she is looking forward to meeting you!"

  • wow! glad this has not happened to me!! I would either laugh or vomit depending on my mood for the day. I find it weird when ppl other than DH and I talk to the belly at all, I know she can hear them, but it is still very strange!

  • Well I have yet to have someone talk to my belly like that, but... I have actually asked people who are around DS regularly not to talk to him like that.  He has incredible speech but is a total repeat machine and the last thing I need is for him to start talking in a whiny baby voice or having it hurting his vocab skills.

  • I am glad I am not the only one that feels like this. I kinda felt bad because my MIL is really excited, but I almost can't take it :)

  • Ask them to stop, I did. Just tell them they are taking to a person please stop with the voices
  • There are some folks at work who do that to my belly... SO annoying.

H doesn't do baby talk... but sometimes he uses the "dog voice" when talking to LO which is like this really loud, excited voice. We joke that she's sitting in there going "who the hell is this guy?"

  • I have a gf that always does this. She even tries to rub or pat the belly like it's the actual baby. I'm not very touchyfeely and this always creeps me out. I don't mind ppl touching the belly or trying to feel her kick but the whole "hewo baby. How aw you today sweetiepie" schtick grates me. I just have to tell myself that she's super happy about the baby and she does it outta love.
  • I hate when people try to talk to me through my belly, no matter what voice it is. I really hate baby talk too. I know it won't matter when she's really really young, but I don't want anyone talking to LO in baby talk. I worked with kids about 15-18 months and up and you could tell which parents always used baby talk. (I know all kids are different but I got to see them in action with their parents too)

  • My MIL does this. . . and she also waves hello and good-bye to my belly like the baby can see her through my skin.  However- we don't see my MIL all that often, so I ignore.

  • I have a friend who does this, and it about drives me bat-crap crazy... but she's my friend, so I grit my teeth because I try really hard to "choose my battles". The strange thing is, I never hear her talk to her own son that way. Hopefully she'll knock it off when this baby is on the outside.
