Now that I'm all hacked off (plus, the AC is out in my building and it's quite warm in here, so I'm getting angrier by the second), I wanted to give everyone who asked a quick update on my brother, since I finally got a phone call this afternoon. It'll cheer me up.
It looks like my brother has turned the corner past the life-threatening stage of the disease. He was moved out of the ICU late last night and had a really rough night following that, but he was able to shower and eat a few bites of jell-o around midday today. My step-mom thinks they'll be home sometime Thursday. He still has lesions in his mouth and urinary tract, but his esophagus is getting better and the spot on his lung was gone. He's slowly, slowly getting better and still absolutely miserable, but I'm so relieved that he's going to be OK.
Thanks again to everyone for the thoughts and prayers.

Yes, it was a reaction to a z-pack. As it turns out, he's had this issue before, but clearly not to the same extent. When he was about 10, he had sores all inside his mouth, but it was never worse than that. He had been on a z-pack at that time for strep throat, but he was nearly finished with it and no one made the connection of the meds to his issue. Since SJS is so rare, he was never diagnosed with it. This time, he was also on day 4 of a z-pack but since it got so much worse, they were able to make the connection this time.
Apparently, antibiotics in combination with ibuprofen are a common trigger for this, too.
