Breastfeeding

No more milk?!?!?

My baby is 5 months and has been breastfed. I exclusively breastfeed him when I'm home from work which is 4 days a week. I work 12 hour shifts and pump twice while I'm there. I usually pump about 12-15 ounces while I'm at work but yesterday I only pumped 5. Today while feeding my baby it wasn't enough and I had to supplement with bottles. Does anyone know about having such a decrease? I'm upset because I wanted to continue breastfeeding.

Re: No more milk?!?!?

  • I'm no expert, but how long are you going between pumping at work? Only pumping twice in 12 hrs does not seem like enough. How often does LO eat from the breast when you are home? If you are not pumping that many tines on the days you work it could be impacting your supply.

  • I've been back at work for 3 months and this is the first time I've had a decrease. He drinks about the same amount I pump during the day. So I'm not sure.
  • My advice is don't stress! (easier said than done) Continue your pumping at work, what is happening to you is normal. If you can add in 2-3 extra pumping sessions during the day either before during or after work, keep nursing baby on cue when you are together and pumping while at work. You may have to supplement with formula if you don't have enough stored while at work, ve sure to only offer the minimum amount nessecary, some mommas have great success 'power pumping' think happy thoughts about this it really helps not to stress!

  • I'm trying not stress but it's making me really sad. I don't really have the opportunity to pump more while at work. I have a fast-paced job and really can only do it 2-3 times. I work 3 times during the week but the other days I was only breastfeeding. I guess it's just strange to me that my supply dropped so fast and unexpectedly.
  • I know this is a personal question but have you gotten your first period yet? If you are ovulating you could have a short term decrease in milk. I know that happened to me and I was very surprised to get it as soon as I did since I was not regular before ds and was bfing and pumping at that point.

  • Were you stressed out about something? I was really stressed one day and did not pump as much as I normally do. Things were fine the next day.
