help! suddenly cracked nipples

My pump has suddenly started cracking my nipples. it started friday with just one side. i didn't pump at all over the weekend, but DS ate off it. It hurt, but not too bad. This week its just getting worse. it's almost to the point of bleeding. and i just pumped and now the other one is starting to rub/crack/peel whatever too. i've been putting lanolin on, but it's not working fast enough.

what the hell! i feel like i'm breastfeeding a newborn again. but it's my effing pump. what do i do? i just can't not pump while i'm at work. help, my nips hurt.

    I don't know about fixing the cause, but the best solution for dry/cracked nips for me was rubbing some breast milk on them and letting them air dry. Works way better than any ointment.

    And yes, I totally sit around my office for a couple of minutes letting the girls air dry.

    ouch! does adjusting the settings help any? like turn down the suction? what about changing out the flange size?

    Any chance it's thrush?  I experienced something similar when DD was around 8 months old.  I couldn't figure out for the life of me why my nips were cracking and hurting like hell out of the blue.   Turned out it was thrush (I didn't have any other symptoms, and it took over a week for the white patches to show up in DD's mouth).

    thanks ladies. i hope it's not thrush, but i've never had it before so i have no idea what to look for/expect. i wish i had more time to let the girls air dry after feeding but my pump room is a communal room with construction guys trying to bust down the door whenever i have it closed. (i have no idea why these guys never learned to knock. thank god for locks).

    as for the pump settings, i already keep it pretty low.

    i'm off to google thrush.

    Do you lube up the girls before you pump?  I used olive oil.
