Pre-School and Daycare

FT or PT

I'm from Ontario, and here instead of pre-school we have junior kindergarten (JK).  It starts in sept, with registration being this february.  We have the option of sending DS part time (mon, wed, every other fri, or tues, thurs, every other fri). Or full time, mon-fri.  The hours are 9am-3:30pm.  I work FT so, maybe once or twice a week he'd be in DC for 5+ hours so I can sleep because I work nights.

Most schools are transitioning over to only having a FT option.  All the schools will be this way by the time DD goes to JK.  Just curious if you had these 2 choices which one you would choose for your LO.  We were thinking about PT, but then with still having to send him to DC, I kinda think FT would be just the same.  WWYD?

Re: FT or PT

  • We do JK then SK (senior kindergarten) in 2013, then 1st grade etc.  You can do PT or FT for both JK and SK, but 1st grade is obviously FT.  It is free. I've thought about doing PT for SK then FT for SK.  But now I've been thinking more about just doing FT all together since that's the way a lot of school are changing too.

  • I'd probably do FT.  Of course I work FT and our DC preschool is essentially all day so there's that.  But I do know that in talking to the local school principal about FT kindergarten or PT, he said they are moving toward doing away with PT kindergarten because there is a vast difference between the kids coming from FT and those coming from PT and it takes a while for those coming from PT to catch up, which can be frustrating for them.

  • My younger DD Starts PreK in the fall and my older DD is there now and we do a full time option and my older DD loves it.  If you will be sending your child to daycare anyway, I would not even think twice about doing the full time option.  Tyhe part time option seems like a nightmare with the different days and such.

  • Since he will be in daycare if not in pk I would just put him in full time - less switching more consistnacy seems better.
