Nurseries and Baby Gear

If you're not anti-crib bumper, do come in...

Or heck, even if you are...

I'm thinking I want a bumper for the crib.  Am I crazy?  Am I dismissing the "research" too easily?

FWIW, I, a grown woman, got my hand stuck between the slats of my friend's crib while we were putting the darn $800 thing together.  If my baby somehow lodged a leg or twisted an arm or who knows what, I think I might lose my mind.

What are your thoughts?

Having a safe baby was more important than have the room look "complete".

Agree 100%... I guess I just don't know if I'm more convinced that a possible stuck arm/leg or potential suffocation is the larger risk.  Especially when so many who don't have bumpers still allow their baby to co-sleep with them in the bed.

It's not about nursery completeness by any means, but I get what you're saying. Cast better than casket, definitely morbid but true.

  • You`re not crazy. I would go for the breathable bumper.
  • I had a bumper as a baby and my two kids had them too and we're fine. This baby will get them too. I think it's totally up to the parent.  Unless you're in Chicago where they banned the sale of them (I think).  If it is a huge concern then get the breatheable bumpers and not even get the regular ones cause you'll most likely pull them out once they start climbing. I have climbers and they use the bumper to step on to climb out of the crib.

  • We are using the bumper. I will take it out once LO starts being able to move around in the crib probably, but at first I do like the look of it in.  I'm also *gasp* using a crib that my grandfather made in the 1940's. My feeling is 8 of us slept in it without issue, there is no reason to think this baby shouldn't either.
  • I'm using the bumper that came with the bedding.  I've known two kids in my lifetime that have broken their femur from getting legs broken in the crib railing, and none that have suffocated (or close to suffocating) from crib bumpers.  My kids survived bumpers and so did I.......I think it's just common sense.  If my baby ends up being one that gets too close for comfort, I will either take off the bumper or get a breathable one.  Babies don't even start moving in their crib until around 3 months anyways.

  • I use bumpers, but not until 6 months.  DD#1 slept in the PnP with mesh sides in our room until 6 months and DD#2 will as well.

  • I'm doing breathable ones. To me it's a middle ground. I get peoples thought process on well I slept with them and I'm fine. But I also rode without an a carseat my childhood and I'm still alive, doesn't mean I'm gonna do the same for my kids. I think IF something happened could I live with myself going against the warnings....

  • I started using a bumper when DS was 6 months.

  • I will use it until we transition the baby to the crib around 3 months because I like the look of them. Once baby is in the crib I will remove it and put it back in once the baby is more mobile and has better head control around 6-9 months.

  • I've always used bumpers but I also used the angelcare

the first months babies don't even move, they start to do it around 3m and by 4 or 5 they can roll over so if they get too close and breathing is difficult they just move; if you're worried get the breathable ones or remove them for that 1-2 months period when the baby moves but isn't able to roll back away from the crib

  • I agree with PP.  We have a breathable bumper in our crib.  It's been wonderful.  DS got a leg stuck between the slats of a crib at my IL's house & screamed bloody murder, scared the crap outta us all.  The next day, they got the breathable bumpers too.

I also like that they collapse if he tries to stand on them.  I've heard regular bumpers can offer enough support to help them climb out but the BB's (mesh) just collapse if he tries to use them.

This is how I feel.  I am a FTM so I guess I don't have much to compare it to but I have the Angel Care monitor and I will take it out when she starts rolling but doesn't have much head control.

  • My kiddo gets his arms and legs through the slats all the time and at worst, he'll try to turn in his sleep, cry a bit, wake up, move, and go back to sleep. He moves a ton in his sleep, too, and we've never had a problem. A breathable bumper is a great compromise if you are worried. We used the bumper between the rolling stage and the pulling up stage (4 - 6 months) when I felt comfortable that it was safe for him and we could have definitely lived without it.

You actually don't want to use it after they start pulling up (8 - 10 months usually) because they can use it as a step to help get out of the crib. We only used ours for about 2 or 3 months because I wanted to wait until he was easily rolling both ways (4 months) and then he started pulling up consistently around 6 months.

  • If the mattress is a snug fit, you should not be able to get your hand caught between the mattress and the slats.  I bought and returned a mattress because it wasn't a tight enough fit.

I also went with the breathable bumper, and I'm glad I did.  I woke up the other night to find DS (5 months old) with his face up against the breathable bumper.  I don't want to think how that would have played out if it weren't breathable.

    Amen, sister.

And as for the bumper - we have never used one, and my child has been in her crib since 4 weeks old (she STTN quite early and is a really good sleeper).  She's never caught anything in the crib slats.

  • nothing wrong with that, it is very easy for babys to get a foot or hand stuck in there, they make breathable ones but even the traditional ones are fine,

i have 7 years nanny experience , every single child i have watched had the traditional bumper an no bad experiences

i know they say alot about sids and bumpers, but as long as your keeping blankets , stuff animals and other things out of the crib i think you should be  fine

  • Thanks everyone... I think the breathable bumper is gonna be the way to go for us. FTM here and I didn't even know that was an option.

Regardless of the bumper the hands/feet can slip out....like this

  • Do not dismiss the research!  Not only are they harmful and can cause death but they are dangerous in general and severely reduce the amount of airflow which babies need.  Also my son used them to climb out of the crib. I was also frustrated with how sloppy they looked on the crib and the ties did not even tie properly with my crib that had the side boards.

I decided to use the WONDER BUMPERS, they were the answer I was looking for because I wanted some padding to protect my babies head.  Its also kept limbs inside and if they peeked through a little it was soft and there were no entanglement issues. They have awesome discounts on there website.

This has happened to us on a number of occasions as LO is very mobile.  Breatheable bumper only- why in the world would you take the risk?
