Flu Symptoms in Baby

My 7 1/2 month son got his flu shot on 1/20/12.  He had no symptoms or any problems.  However, one week later on 1/27/12 he spiked a 102 degree fever and has been sick and fussy.  He also has asthma and is on breathing treatments every four hours.  We were able to keep the fever down Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday by alternation tylenol and ibuprofen.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  He is currenlty not running a fever, but is very congested, runny nose, horrible cough, wheezing, and rattling.  He has an appt. tomorrow with pedi.  Any thoughts....

Re: Flu Symptoms in Baby

  • While your son may be sick and may even have the flu, he can't get the flu from the flu shot.  The flu shot is a dead virus.  Live virus vaccines are a different story, but unless he got the flumist, which he shouldn't have at his age, then it was a dead virus vaccine.  The rattling chest, runny nose, wheezing, etc sounds more like RSV, although he could have a different strain of flu than what's in the vaccine.  Ask your pedi about getting tested for RSV when you go in.

  • thanks for the info....he did not get mist, it was a shot.  he was tested for RSV on 1/14/12, which was negative, along with a chest x-ray for pneumonia, which was also negative.  we go tomorrow, so i'm going to bring up the RSV again, along with croup.  thanks for your input!!!
