Trouble TTC

I need advice.....:/ (long)

I have been soooo stressed out lately trying to figure out what road we want/need to go down. I am really considering just taking off awhile and saving for IVF. I feel my chances will be greater if we do that considering all that I have going on and just one functioning tube. My dr. recommended doing lap surgery again....which I really want to do because of having such heavy/painful/long periods. My concern is if I should just let my ob/gyn to that surgery since insurance will pay for....or should I try to pay out of pocket for the RE and possible get my tube repaired. They don't really know why my tube is blocked...they think it may be in a zig zag pattern like my other one was...or just may be "pinned". If it is either of those then my ob/gyn get fix that. If it is anything beyond that in need of repair then she can't. So...my question is...what would you do? Let the obgyn do the surgery and take the risk of not getting the tube repaired....or let the RE do it to get the tube repaired (if possible)....or should I just save for IVF and forget the tube all together??? HELP!

Re: I need advice.....:/ (long)

  • Thats a tough one - have you contacted your insurance company to find out what you're looking at for the RE to do the surgery? Also, have you sat down with the RE to discuss if it is beyond, what are the odds that they are able to 100% repair the tube and unblock it? Or what the chances are of conception if the tube is repaired? I know, there are a lot of questions here......

At this point in time, are you willing to pay a crapload of money out of pocket to possibly have the tube repaired? or would it make more sense to have a surgery that's covered to see if the OB can fix it? If money weren't an issue, I'd say pay OOP for the RE surgery to see if the tube can get repaired. But since money doesn't grow on trees, my first reaction would be to have the lap with the OB first. At least she/he can tell you whether or not the tube repair is beyond their "jurisdiction." if it is, then you know you will either be paying $ for a tube repair, or IVF. In that case, I might choose IVF since a repaired tube might still not guarantee pregnancy. Your odds of getting pg with IVF are probably greater with IVF, but again I'm not a doctor. I'm sorry you have to deal with this predicament, and I hope everything works out for you......FX.

  • Thanks! Everything you just asked has been swirling in my head. I def. do NOT have the money to throw around for the surgery, just to "maybe" get my tube repaired. I am leaning more toward letting the obgyn in do it and tell me whats up. It just sucks....

  • I would have the OB repair it.  It the cost is covered, and you don't have the money really to pay for it yourself (And even if you did, I think that money would be better used for IVF).

  • I would have the OB do it.  If the cost is covered by insurance then it saves you the money.  Plus even if you did have the money, I think it's better spent saving for IVF.

  • Oh man, sweetie. I'm so sorry you are worrying about all of this right now. That's a really tough decision to have to make!

If I were in your shoes, I would probably let the OB do the Lap, and go from there.

I wish you nothing but the best! Good luck!

  • I'd have your ob do the lap. Idk where you're from but my lap, had it not been covered by insurance, would have been $16k. You could get 2 fresh ivfs and most of a fet for that here.

  • I agree with pretty much everything everyone else has said.  One thing to add, they've done studies and it shows that people who wait to do IVF typically spend thousands more than people who just go ahead and do it.  Having said that, we'd love to get pregnant naturally and maybe we can, but I'd be frustrated if I spent so much money on different treatments that failed just to eventually move to IVF.  GL!

  • I agree with all the ladies that have already responded.

If I were in your shoes, I would have the ob/gyn do the lap.  That would help your periods of course but remember, you still have a chance that that Dr. could fix your tube problem.  If it's paid for by your insurance, it's a win/win.  If after this sugery, your tube is still not clear then you have another choice to either "attempt" to have the RE fix it or just move on with IVF.  No matter what your decision is after your first lap, you won't have been out any money yet which may make the IVF decision easier in the long run.  Of course, I don't know your situation but obviously money is on everyone's mind.

GL in your decision and I hope they can get the tube clear for you!

  • I have to agree with OP, I would have the lap with your ob and save your money for IVF if you should need it. It's always a tough choice and I know you'll do what you feel is right for you. Good luck!
