XP - Old break in the tail bone

I meant to post this here, but posted in Natural Birth by accident....

Over the summer, I'm fairly certain I broke my tail bone... Either right before or right after I got pregnant, but I didn't know yet.  I didn't go to the doctor since there is nothing they could do about it anyway, and now I'm suddenly freaking out about labor... Anyone have experience with this?

  • I'm going to freak you out right now.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen and her baby re-broke her tailbone during delivery!

  • I was recovering from bilateral fractures in my pelvis when I got pregnant last time and had no issues with delivery, so I hope your tail bone doesn't give you trouble.

  • I have heard of crazy situations in birth. The doula that I often speak to on the phone actually broke her back while giving birth. Sometimes a monkeywrench gets tossed in. I would say not to worry about it too much. If you never went and got it checked out then it couldnt have been that bad. If you can still walk around just fine from day to day, I would say that you'll be ok.

I do worry about my hip during labor. I shattered my acetabulum. Basically the top of my femur went through the back of my pelvis about three years ago. I have four metal plates and seven screws that hold my pelvis together now. Yet, the doctor says that I have no birth restrictions. So, I still plan to go natural (vaginal, med-free). I simply tell myself everyday that I CAN DO THIS!

  • Thank you guys!  It wasn't horrible, and I hang out with roller derby chicks, so I knew that there was nothing that the doc could have done... So I'm going to bring it up to my MW at my next appointment and leave it there... I am trying to go intervention free, so fingers crossed!

  • I def. bruised my tailbone after delivery- not to scare anyone, but I could barely sit "properly" for a long time...I never got it "diagnosed", but one of the nurses who was with me during L&D I told her how I was in a lot of pain and couldn't sit directly one my bum without a lot of pain and she said it sounded like a bruised tailbone and she had experienced the same 1 year before when she gave birth to her daughter...I get I got use to it and ways of sitting without sitting directly on it...I would def, get what they called a donut pillow if you can find one, the healing took months, but it eventually healed- thank goodness it never broke, my DH's friend broke hers and she was in a cast from the bottom down...not fun!  Not sure if it's still procedure since it was years ago...

  • I think you should be fine, and if it does re break, I'm sure the pain will nothing compared to birth.  I am worried about my hips handling pregnancy.  I had hip surgery last Feb and was told to not get pregnant. but here I am with my little uh oh lol
  • It's worth bringing up to your L&D staff when you're there for delivery.  I'm dealing with this SPD awfulness now and there are some "techniques" that are commonly used in birthing that should be avoided with this diagnosis.  If the staff knows what you're dealing with, they can probably accomidate to make it more comfortable to you.  Like being able to deliver on all 4s, maybe.
