What are you plans for your LO's dental health? Will you start taking LO to the dentist around their 1st birthday? When their first tooth comes in? Will you rely on your pedi for dental updates?
Most pediatricians say that you should bring them once their teeth are in. But the general rule is by age 3 (just ask your own dentist). So my LO is turning 3 in March and we will go for her first visit in Feb, she will go to a pediatric dentist, all though my dentist said we could bring her, they said if there are any issues they would just refer us to a pediatric dentist anyway. I do know people who have been taking their kids since 6months. Pedi's don't handle dental issues.

Glad you said that. The grandparents are all assuring us that the pedi is fine to be her dentist until she's in gradeschool.
I have no plans to take DS to the dentist until he's old enough to sit still. I just think it would be a waste of our money at this point. He does have 5 teeth though.
I am purely a lurker on these boards but thought I should reply to your post since I work for a pediatric dentist. I would definitely recommend taking your LO to visit a PEDIATRIC dentist by the age of 1. The dentist and/or hygienist probably won't be able to get much done in your LO's mouth for the first couple of visits but this will familarize your LO to the dentist and new place so that he/she will be more comfortable in the future.
Also, we provide information on hygiene and games to play with your LO that will help them cooperate when brushing their teeth. Try to find a pediatric dentist in your area because these Doctors are specialized in caring for children and most offices are very kid friendly....like our office has a music room, movie room, puppet room, and we give out tokens for good appointments and they can use them to buy prizes out of our prize cabinets. You wouldn't believe how well the tokens work on LOs! Hope this helps!!
I just took DS1 for his first dental visit in August of last year so he had just turned 3, he loved going, but when I was there the dentist suggested when I bring DS1 back for his 6 months dental checkup to bring DS2 in with us and she will take a quick look at him. She said its more just for him to get used to going. I will be taking them both in for a visit in a couple weeks.

My dentist says age 3 - he said we should clean his teeth with gauze while the first few are coming in and when he gets most of them in start brushing.

THIS^^ I am a hygienist at a pediatric office. by the time they get their first tooth or one is what we typically tell people.
I've noticed the kids who are well adjusted to coming to the dentist start coming young. The ones having a nervous breakdown at 7-8 still didn't start coming until they were 4 or 5, and by then they already had a cavity so their first visits included restorations.
The first visits are more so for parent education more than anything. Ex: did you know that if you are cavity prone, you can pass the cavity causing bacteria to your child?
