1st Trimester

1st appt not so good.... Sooo confused...

Started my period on 1/17 as expected, but it was very strange.  Upon the advice of a coworker, on 1/27 I took a test because I was still on my period, and I got my BFP.  I took another test the following morning.  And another the next.  All three were positive.  (I'm still a light flow on 1/31!)  I made an appointment to see my doctor yesterday, who sent me to the hospital for bloodwork and an US.  They did both an internal and external US, which yeilded no real results other than a super tiny spot, as the tech put it, "could become something, or could become nothing."  She kept saying, "you must be really early on..."  My blood test was ordered stat, and it came back showing that I am only 1 week pregnant.  Yes.  1 week.  I didn't even know they could tell that early on!?  The doctor told me my HCG levels were at 22 and compared with what they saw on the US, that is where they think I am at.  No one would confirm if I was in fact pregnant or not, and when I asked how on earth I could have taken 3 tests over the weekend and all 3 came out positive so early on, the doctor said, "Yea, that is what is really baffling."  ????  So now I have to wait until 2/16 when my next period would be due to start to make another appointment.....  THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING.  I went in to this appointment thinking I was 6 weeks, (based off of my Dec. period, and assuming this thing in January was not a period,) but apparently I must have conceived right at the start of this period...  What in the heck is going on here???

  • None of this makes sense at all. Hope it works out for you

  • This is why a lot of women chart and temp to keep track of their cycles. You likely ovulated later than usual in December, so you wouldn't be 6w along. At 6w, you would be able to see an embryo and possibly a hb, and your hcg levels would be well over 1000. 22 is not a high number, but one beta figure alone is not enough to tell you whether you have a pregnancy that looks like it's progressing in a healthy way. You need to call your doctor back and have them do a repeat blood draw and get another quantitative beta reading. Your beta levels should double every 48-72 hours at this stage in a healthy pregnancy. Good luck!

  • That doesn't make a whole lot of sense from my standpoint. I'm not sure how it'd be possible that you are only one week pregnant w/a BFP. I guess it could happen? But you wouldn't even be able to see anything on the u/s at 1 week. At my 5w u/s there wasn't much to be seen (pretty much just the sac)... What I don't understand is why they wouldn't be testing your HCG levels over the course of the next few days to see if they go up. To me, that would give a pretty clear answer one way or another. I would request that they monitor your levels. It will give you some pretty clear answers quickly.

  • Unfortunately there are only two real possibilities.  You're either very very early (and no, you can't be 1 week pregnant) or your levels were higher when you took the test than when you went to the doctor, which obviously isn't a good sign.  I hope you get answers soon!

  • It's very strange that your doctor would say you are 1 week pregnant. At "1 week pregnant" you technically aren't even pregnant yet. I am very surprised they don't have another blood draw scheduled so they can see if your hcg levels are rising properly for a successful pregnancy. Good luck!

  • like pp's i'm super confused as to why your dr said you were 1 week pregnant considering at the point of conception you are considered 2 weeks. so even if you just conceived you would already be 2 weeks along. i have never heard of 1 week pregnant. good luck.

  • You CANNOT be 1 week pregnant. If you conceived a week ago, then that wasn't a real period and you are approximately THREE weeks pregnant (or Oed really late the cycle before), which matches with your HcG number. You can't see anything on an ultrasound this early, which is why they need you to come back. Right now, you are pregnant, congrats. The bleeding is a concern though, and we don't know if your HcG is on its way up (they should be checking it again in 48 hours to make sure it's increasing properly to be a viable pregnancy) or down (not viable). GL to you, and if this is not your sticky baby, please read a book on pregnancy and conception.

  • This cold be way way way off, but I'm going to say it anyways.  Is it possible she got pregnant in December and is now miscarrying?  Resulting in the low hcg.

OP, as PP have said its not possible to be one week pregnant.  I'm surprised your dr would even say something like that.

  • You may be earlier than you think, you cant see anything on ultrasound until your betas are 2000.

  • If the doc says 1 week pregnant, s/he could mean one week past conception, 3 weeks as of last period.  Isn't that possible?  I know most docs go my last period, but that seems to be the only possible explanation for being pregnant at 1 week.  A HCG in the 20's is usually around the 3-4 week mark if I'm right.

Prayers and happy thoughts for you girl, this must be so confusing and overwhelming!  Best of luck in your next few appointments!!

  • It is possible to have conceived, if you hadn't taken the test you wouldn't know because you wouldn't have had any signs for another couple of weeks or so. Congratulations!

  • I'm not sure what's going on with you.  I would, however, demand that they draw more blood and check your HCG levels every other day to see what they are doing.  It possible it could be ectopic and you could have a mass growing in your tube. I hope that's not the case, but I would think they would want to monitor your levels for that reason alone. I had an ectopic where there was nothing to see on the u/s but an empty sac.  My levels were going down, but then started to rise again.  If they hadn't kept checking, I might not have known it was in my tube. It can be very dangerous.

     GL to you!

  • I want to SINCERELY thank every single one of you.  Upon everyone's advice online and in person, I have changed doctors and made an appointment with a highly recommended OBGYN nearby.  They got me in last minute today to do their own blood draw, and said they would call tomorrow to let me know where I'm at.  Didn't get to see the doctor yet, but I'm sure I will schedule something tomorrow.  I am appalled by the way I was treated yesterday, and if you could see the bruise left on my arm from the blood draw alone.... Quite frankly, I will never go back to that doctor/hospital again.  I am praying that my levels are higher from today's reading than they were at the hospital.  I will keep everyone posted who showed concern - THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

This exactly! My very first appointment, I was only 5 or 6 weeks and they drew blood, then wanted me to come back in 2 days to draw more. To make sure my numbers were rising as normal. This is the true indicator.
