Community Garden down the road

Man, I wish I would have known they'd opened a community garden area down the road from me. Tempted to see if there are any lots still open (but that's probably insane with a toddler and a newborn on the way). Still...the idea of sunshine enough to grow beefsteak tomatoes and sweet corn in TEMPTING!

Anyone else do community garden plots? Has it been a good experience?

Re: Community Garden down the road

  • I did one last year and LOVED it. Being able to dig in the dirt, plant veggies and fruits, and see the harvest come in gave me a lot of joy. However, I didn't have a baby at that time...so not sure how it would be for you now, but I think it could be fun to bring your kids along too. I have fond memories of gardening with my mother and searching for earthworms while she planted things.

  • I'd definitely check! That sounds awesome. I had one in college and loved it. Do you have a friend you can split with, so that it doesn't go to seed/bugs when you're busy with the babies?

  • I had one at my college campus, and I loved it...EXCEPT that in the summer it was a PITA to get to campus to tend it (buses are cut way back and there really isn't any parking).  If you can walk there and have someone to watch the new baby for an hour or so during the really hot days, I say go for it.

  • I just wanted to add that I grew a garden this past summer with a 2.5yr old and a newborn. Of course it was my own garden, so that was obviously easier, but I just kept my standards low. For example all the weeding that needed to get done did not. Also, certain veggies didn't get thinned out (ie: carrots) so there were less of those - or fewer full sized.  Still, it was worth it.

I will add I was able to plant the garden before my baby was born, so that helped immensely.  Also, I enlisted my mom to come weed periodically, in exchange for whatever produce she wanted. Do you know anyone who could help you out and share the work and harvest?
