Breastfeeding

Solids ?

For those of you who EBF:

 1. When will/did you start solids?

2. What did you start with?

3. Are you giving your LO any vitamin supplements?

Background: DS is 4mon and pedi said I could start rice cereal, but I don't think he's ready. Also, I don't see a point to rice cereal. I'd prefer to start him with yams or applesauce. She also gave me a scolding look for not giving him vit D supplements b/c I take him for walks in the sunshine almost every day. I just want what's best for  DS, and I'm following my gut more than the pedi's advice.

Re: Solids ?

  • With ds we were super excited first time parents and fed him rice cereal per pedi's approval at 4 months.  Then I realized how much of a pita it was.

This time, I'm in no hurry but dd already stares at me and moves her mouth when I'm eating which is a sign for it.  I really don't want to start before 6 months though this time and certainly wouldn't until 4 at the very earliest.  We'll probably start with rice cereal again since they recommend it because it's next to impossible for them to have an adverse reaction to it and ds have a couple food allergies so we may run into them with her too.

Both my kids get vitamins.  DD's pedi just put her on one that has all the basic vitamins and iron.  She previously was just taking vitamin d from birth because she was jaundiced and apparently bf-ed babies need 400 iui of D.  I hate the iron one and she doesn't take it well so we may just go back to the D for a while.

  • My kids are older now but I breastfed each for about 2 years.

I gave them vitamin-d as rec by the doctor.

I started them on rice cereal at around 4months but I think it was closer to 5. (not earlier) I mixed it with breastmilk although I have seen people who mixed it with formula.Rice cereal is one of the first things recommended to start babies on. I think it's one of the easiest to digest. (less chance of reaction)

EDIT I will check for sure, my younger son was probably a bit older.

  • 1. 5 months, because he showed a lot of interest and all the signs of being ready.

    2. First was oatmeal, then sweet potato. We had enough constipation in the beginning without rice. You might not try apple first for the same reason.  I think these websites for recipes and info:

    3. We do give Vitamin D. We live in New England, so even if he got the 10min exposure, the sun is not strong enough in winter to produce enough Vit D. Giving extra won't hurt him. We use the Carlson D-Drops for kids (400IU), which is one drop and no artificial coloring or flavoring, so it really doesn't bother me.

    3. Are you giving your LO any vitamin supplements?          we gave him the vitamin D sporadically (our pedi was adamandt about it, too).  Now we switched to a multivitamin.  He just LOVES it!  Loves it!  It is so damn gross....anyways, we give it to him nightly just because he loves it so much.

Trust your gut.  You're doing the right thing and you're doing what is right for your baby!
