1st Trimester

For those still waiting to have their 1st appt...

I got my BFP at 3w6d and called my OB for an appt a few days later (it was the weekend). Anyway, the soonest I could get in to see my OB is not until FEB 24th! That is still a month away. The wait is driving me nuts. I got so impatient I called today to see what will happen at that appt and I was told that an u/s would only be done if the doc couldn't find the heartbeat using a doppler.  Am I the only one considering going to a clinic or something just to get an early peek at the baby? Please tell me I'm not crazy.

Re: For those still waiting to have their 1st appt...

  • They aren't going to do an ultrasound? That's strange, but I hear every doctor is different. I had an u/s at 8 weeks and 12 weeks when I was pregnant with my daughter.

  • I tought it was strange too-especially since I'll be 10 weeks by then-almost done with 1st tri. But yeah, she just said he will do a physical and take down family and pregnancy history. He will listen for a heartbeat but not do an u/s unless he can't find the hearbeat by listening. I'm so impatient.
  • Steff, I found out I was pregnant Jan.5 and my first appointment is February 1. I know exactly how you feel. If going to a clinic will give you even a little peace of mind, do it! I wish I had...this has been the longest month of my life!

  • A lot of doctors - including my own- don't do ultrasounds until 20 weeks for the "big" ultrasound unless you are opting for the NT scan between 11-12 weeks.

  • My first appt was at 8 weeks...  it isn't standard for my clinic to do ultrasounds until 20 weeks but they ordered one to confirm my due date.  It is hard to wait but it is definitely normal.  If you want to go in earlier I would check with insurance or make sure you want to pay for anything prior to what your doctor orders.  But if you hear the baby on the doppler that should ease your worries.  Some people buy home dopplers so they can check in between appts.  With my anxiety issues I know that is not a good thing for me since I would become obsessed and freak out if I didn't hear it!  But that is something to consider.
  • Most doctors won't see you till about 8 weeks or so. Some are even later than that. The reason they wait so late is that normally your baby doesn't have an audible heart beat till about 6 to 8 weeks anywho. If you go to a clinic or something like that it will just disappoint you cause at 5 weeks for me there was still nothing to see. I went to the ER at almost 5 weeks for severe lower abdominal pain and there wasn't anything visual in my uterus. Then I had a follow up appointment 2 days later 5w 1d and there was just a gestational sac. I have to wait till I am 8 weeks too before I get to go to my first ob appointment. I am excited and it seems like it is taking forever to get here. I completely understand where you are coming from.

This will be me. I won't see my doctor until 12 weeks- and they won't do the u/s until 19-20 weeks. That's normal for my area apparently.

I had to just accept it and move on! I phoned 5 diffferent clinics just to see what they did and this is what they all told me! The only way I would get an u/s or see someone earlier is I was cramping/bleeding or something unusual going on.

My first appt is next Monday, 1 day shy of 12 weeks. My doctor siad that even though I am older, I am low risk and no need to be seen sooner!

  • Me! still waiting until Feb 13th - I'll be past 12 weeks at that point. I was very low risk last time, so I attribute this torture period to that...

Anyhow, I have a home doppler, so that makes me feel a bit better - I have been able to hear a strong heartbeat on the 160' a couple of times now...

  • I have a long wait too - Feb 17th! I will be 8w5d when I have my 1st appt. I was told that she will do an u/s then and at 20 weeks. Trying to be patient but I have baby on the brain for sure! This is my 1st!
