Tandem BF-ing question

If you're nursing LO#1, when LO#2 is born do you produce colostrum or does it continue to be regular breast milk?

Re: Tandem BF-ing question

  • Good question, I never thought of that before, I got curious and looked it up for you:

     https://www.kellymom.com/nursingtwo/faq/16milkchanges.html

It says that there is a lot colostrum in the milk usually in the last month of pregnancy and the older baby's stools may be a bit softer while this happens due to the laxative effect of the colostrum.

I'd recommend asking this on the BF board, too. Those ladies might be able to share a lot personal experiences/info.

  • I don't know from personal experience (yet), but this has come up at LLL meetings and I just finished reading Adventures in Tandem Nursing (a great, helpful book). BM caters itself to the youngest baby , so it will increasingly turn to colostrum. As the PG progresses, baby 1 may self-wean because of the taste/composition change. The milk also may dry up before coming in again when baby 2 is born.
  • I had colostrum and it changed back to milk by day 3.

"softer stools?"  Haha that's an understatement - it's just like EBF newborn poop!
