Probably a really stupid ? about yogurt

I'm pretty sure that I've seen others on here mention giving LO yogurt.  Why is yogurt ok to give an infant but not cow's milk?  And for those of you giving yogurt, any reactions of any kind and what kind are you giving?  I'd like to keep it as natural as possible.

Re: Probably a really stupid ? about yogurt

  • We just gave yogurt for the first time yesterday!  He loves it!  I guess it's okay because the bacteria makes it easier to digest than straight cows' milk.  We gave him yobaby vanilla yogurt.. it's organic and EXPENSIVE.   Boo.  No reactions yet.

    We started yogurt at 8months....

I thought it would be like the baby crack everyone has told me about, but so far, she doesn't seem too interested.  I've only tried the organic YoBaby plain.  I've tried mixing my own purees in to liven it up without the added sugar but I think the consistency just doesn't jive with her.  It seems really runny.

  • We are giving him the stony fields full fat plain yogurt. I will mix in fruit or some cinnamon. He loves it! Less expensive than the yobaby.

  • Yogurt is considered ok after 8m because it isnt as "strong" as straight cows milk. Some people do yogurts and cheeses starting around the 8-9m range. We obviously have not, and will not with DS2 either, until I can get his allergy tests. Whatever you do, make sure its pasteurized.

  • We had been giving it to Mia but I think it is giving her hives on her face. I mentioned it to the pedi and he said to hold off on yogurt for another couple of months. Kind of sad since she loves it!

We've tried the gerber kind (too much added sugar if you ask me, though) and the yobaby plain. They both LOVE yogurt but a few hours after eating it, they both throw up. It took me a little while to figure out that's what was making them throw up. Poor babies. I'm thinking they just have a hard time digesting it, so I'll re-introduce it in like a month or so.

same thing happened with us with Yo Baby so we are taking a break and going back to it in a month or so.

  • I buy plain whole milk organic yogurt.   A loves it.   I currently have a large container of  Stonyfield Farms in the fridge but I'm pretty sure Trader Joes also makes a large one too.    I think I paid 3.99 for a huge tub of plain yogurt.   I mix in my own purees.   He loves it with bananas and peaches the best.

  • We also got plain full fat (Dannon Natural) yogurt.  Maya eats it plain or mixed with fruit purees like prunes, peaches, pears, and applesauce (I usually do 2 different fruits at once).

  • I buy the Dannon "All Natural" organic, full fat, plain yogurt... I just get the big tub (cheaper) and mix in a spoonful of whatever fruit I have made for him at the time to sweeten it up without the added sugar. He LOVES it! It's his middle of the day snack/lunch every day.
