Anyone else counting calories??

First of all I want to say that I am NOT counting calories to loose weight. I am so tired of people thinking that because I am counting calories that I am on a diet. I am honestly counting calories because I want to make sure that I am eating the amounts that I should to keep me and my baby healthy.

With my first child I gained 55lbs and really don't want to do that again. So this time around I am confident that I can do it. I have also been told that you only need about 300 more calories a day when you are pregnant (2nd and 3rd tri).

So I was just curious if I was the only one who was doing this??

  • I have entered in a few days into my sparkpeople profile just to see what I am at for intake and, more recently, to make sure that I am eating enough (my appetite has plummeted).  I think it's a great way to ensure what's being put into your body as long as you aren't restricting!!

This. I sometimes check to make sure I am getting enough.

  • I am, just to prove to my OB that in fact I am eating "enough".  I was accused of not eating enough for me and baby.  So I document everything I eat, and my friends laugh because I eat some outrageous shiz.

  • I am using Sparkpeople's pregnancy site called www.babyfit.com It is really good!
  • I always count calories. Previously, it was to lose or maintain weight. Now, it's to make sure I am eating enough since I am exercising 5 days a week. I say it's ok! :)

  • Some days I do on loseit.com. Also, not for weight loss but to avoid unhealthy gain. With strange cravings and aversions and appetite fluctuations it's easy to lose track of what I've done all day both nutritionally and calorie-wise.

  • I use Myfitnesspal.com...and try to log everyday, but forget every now and then. I also work out at least 3 days a week for pretty long jaunts of at least an hour, and aim for a minimum of 20 minutes everyday.  I set myself to maintenance calories the first tri, and then gain 1/2 lb for the 2nd, which is an additional 300.  I was on the chubby/overweight, but not obese, side before getting pregnant and had lost 26 lbs...so I am trying to not go overboard with being pregnant.  So far I am up 6-8 lbs depending on the day for the last 2 weeks.  I like to make sure I am getting enough calcium, protein and fiber.  I also try to eat back all of my exercise calories...but can't always get them all in.  Most days I am pretty close to my calorie goals, some I have a pretty good size surplus, and sometimes I go over.

There is actually a whole group of pregnant women on Myfitness pal, and they have a group now with Trimester sub groups.

  • I am.

In my prior four pregnancies I started out a normal healthy weight each time.  I have never gained much in previous pregnancies.  I am generally pretty nauseous the first few months and lose some weight.  Then I start to feel better but never regain much of an appetite.  I am just not that hungry during pregnancy (Now breastfeeding is another story?I am *so* hungry when nursing).   I have my days where I am just ravenous but most days my appetite is just non-existent during pregnancy. I try to make healthy choices and I take my prenatal pills.  I typically do not feel guilty on the rare occasion I eat more and occasionally I allow myself some higher caloric foods/drinks I do not normally allow myself (fruit juices, mainly).  My babies have always been healthy full term babies at healthy sizes.  My body just sort of does its thing.  It works for me and the end result has always been a healthy baby.

Here I am at age 35 and pregnant with baby #5.  I am overweight?truly overweight for the first time in my life.  My weight really concerns me.  I started out this pregnancy weighing more than I did 9 months pregnant with my youngest (eek!).  I know in the past I never gained too much so it is unlikely that I would now.  But I am older now with a slower metabolism.  I expressed my concerns to my OB-GYN and he said to aim for 15 pounds and even if I maintain he is fine with that.   That is my goal but of course in the end, I really think the body sort of does its thing.

I count calories on SparkPeople.  I try to keep it in the 1400 range (again with my OB's blessing).
