DH and I have decided to CD our LO who is due in April.
We would like to use PFs and covers for as long as we can and then switch to pockets (we've signed up for a 2 week trial so obviosly this may change).
I thought I could get away with just using PFs and covers, for at least the first 6 months, but then started reading posts here and thinking about late night/middle of the night changes and also baby sitters and now i'm not so confident that I can get by with strictly PFs.
What are your thoughts on this? Were you able to get by with just PFs? Or is it more realistic to buy PFs for mom/dad and daytime changes and pockets or AIOs for those middle of the night changes and babysitters? If I want to save the pockets for babysitters and middle of the night changes only, how many should I add to our stash? So far we are planning on 36PFs and 4 covers to start out with (we want enough to be able to do laundry every 2 days and hang dry only)
Re: FTM question about initial CD stash
No one but H and I was comfortable with the PFs. And even we still struggled to get them on her correctly. I strongly suggest buying a few "easy" diapers. That being said, it may be different for you. Some people love PF's. I suggest waiting until cottonbabies has a 2nds sale and buy some AIOs or pockets. Sign up for their newsletter. Also, look on Spots Corner for used.
Oh, you may like prefitteds. (its a prefold made into a fitted. Those are a little more user friendly.
We quit the middle of the night changes when he quit pooping overnight. I can't even remember when exactly that was, but probably around 3 months. Pockets were a must for overnight for us then - more absorbent and less wet on his skin.
I'd get 36 small prefolds (not newborn) and 5 or 6 covers (Thirsties Duos last longest size wise). Then if you want to diversify, you can do it later. Do your trial and decide after that.
