Postpartum Depression

Question...

DH just took DD to the store without me so I can clean. Right before they leave (probably 10 minutes prior) I get this overwhelming feeling that something bad is going to happen to her. Specifically, a car wreck (I had a bad one about 3 years ago, and the traffic here is terrible). I almost started crying and didn't want her to go, but I did after telling her about 20 times "Mommy loves you" and telling DH to be careful. Logically, I KNOW DH is careful driving with her. I know she's with her daddy, who's a medic for cryin out loud, and if anything were to happen to her he could take care of her. So I let them go, but it's playing in my mind constantly. It just really started, and I have no idea why. She's 5 months old, so you'd think if I were to get symptoms of anything I would have had them by now...

I know I'm being irrational. Is it normal, though? This is the first time it's happened, and I'm a SAH FTM so I'm usually with her all. the. time. And there have been a lot of posts in the last month or so that have dealt with children passing, so maybe I'm just being hypervigilant?

Re: Question...

  • I don't share your hypervigilance, but I know it is one of the symptoms of PPD.  And I've read that PPD can show up as late as 5 months for sure.

It'd be good practice for DH to take DD out mroe often, just the two of them.  Both for your husband to perfect his baby wrangling skills and you to practice letting her be with someone else.  If your anxiety keeps happening, though, it's worth looking into.

(btw, I cried in an Olive Garden the first time we left my DD home with the in-laws)

  • I'm pretty sure PPD/PPA symptoms can come on as much as a year after giving birth.
