crib configurations

We have a small room for the babies - roughly 10x12 - and I am trying to figure out the best way to arrange our room. Right now we have one crib in the corner, and the other up against it perpendicular. (So they make an 'L' shape).

Is it safe to have cribs right next to each other? I assume we will have them in the same crib for a little while anyway?

We also have two windows in the room that come just below the height of the cribs, so blinds may be an issue someday. Any ideas? I worry about them playing with the blinds when they are big enough to stand and reach. Getting ahead of myself, I know.

(Below is an image with the cribs the way we had them before when we were painting and moving things around - but you can see the window height in comparison:

Re: crib configurations

  • Just had to say your nursery is super cute! I love the pandas.  Sorry I can't speak from experience but I'll be curious to see the responses, as we were thinking of arranging ours the same way when we set up our nursery in a few months.

  • Thanks! We got the decals on etsy. Sticking with the black and white theme for the most part. We got a large black rug over the weekend, too.

  • At first I was planning on separating their cribs w/ the dresser/changer, but now I am getting really sappy at the thought of separating them :(  So we'll definitely have them in 1 crib for a little bit.

I think how you have it is good, so they can still see each other but the cribs aren't touching.  I'm going to remember this.

Also, re: blinds, we are doing curtains instead, partially b/c of the blind-string and partially b/c I hate cleaning blinds, haha.  But I don't know if it's a good idea to have a crib in front of a window either way....?

  • I agree with the PP, I wouldn't put the crib in front of a window in any case, regardless of the blinds (you can get cord keepers if the blinds are within reach, but anywhere where they could step up on the windowsill if they climbed up from their crib would be dangerous.

Too bad they don't make bunk cribs.  We're planning on putting ours in an L shape if we can't get the cribs lined up next to each other on one wall.

Your pands are super cute, love the bright green, too!

  • I think it is fine to have the cribs next to each other for awhile.  At some point when they get older, you may have them throwing things (like blankets etc.) into each other's cribs but if it that happens at some point and it becomes an issue then you can always rearrange.

As far as the window, I tried not to have either crib under a window because I worried about a draft but like you mentioned, you also have the blind issue.  What is on the wall that looks empty right now?  Could you put a crib on that wall and then put a dresser on the wall next to the window?

  • We have our cribs along one wall of the nursery. They don't touch - there's about 2 feet or less in between them. I don't think it would be a problem if they touched. It would just  make it easier for them to hand stuff back and forth :):p

DDs were in the same crib until they were about 7 months old and then we added a second crib.  We have a small room like yours that also had a double bed, rocker/recliner, and double dresser in it.  I had both cribs together long-ways and in the corner.  So one crib had one long side and one short side against the wall and then the other long side was against the other crib.  Basically, if you took your crib by the window and pushed it against the other crib (our cribs were even similar to yours).  It worked great and the girls really didn't bother each other too much.  We switched things around when we converted to toddler beds at a little over 2.

  • Thanks everyone!  I know I am getting a bit ahead of myself. I think our L shape will work for now. We will have to deal with the blinds as they get older.

As of now there is a changing table there. We can't put a crib there because it would block the heat register and the door out of the room is just beyond the photo.

It's such a tough room to arrange. One crib would have fit perfectly. It's a good problem to have :)
