Birth Certificate?

So, I somehow forgot or missed this information....  We received his social security card but I have no idea about his birth certificate?  Am I suppose to do anything or will it show up in the mail?  I have no clue.  Thanks!

Re: Birth Certificate?

  • You'll get a notice in the mail that the birth certificate has been filed and there will be instructions on how to obtain a copy.  Keep a look out for it, because it is one of those little post card things that have the perferated edges that you rip off. It kinda looks like junk mail!

I still have yet to go this for Evie.  I am lame!

  • I still haven't gotten Bailey's yet. I just saw that piece of mail the other day and now I am not sure where I put it. Hoping it's in our mail caddy. Maybe I'll put this on my to do list for the week....

  • It took FOREVER. DD was born in January and I don't think it showed up until June. Because I needed her birth certificate for her insurance, I ended up driving to Annapolis, because she was born at AAMC, to get it. I figured it would be faster and less painful than going to the courthouse in Baltimore.

  • I JUST got a copy of DS's last week. I got the little post card saying it had been filed a week or so after he was born, but I never got around to ordering a copy until recently. Here is a link that tells you what you need to do to get a copy. It costs $24 and it arrived about a week after I mailed the application.

  • Yeah I got the notice in the mail about a week or two after we got home. It told me to go to my local Health Department or the main office (somewhere in Baltimore I think, can't remember) and pick it up. I went to the one in Bel Air and filled out a form, paid $30 and walked out with it that day (took about 30 min total).

FYI: if you go to the Bel Air one they are only open Mon-Fri from 8:00 to 12:00 noon.

Huh.  I can recall no such notice.  Can I assume it's been processed in 3 months?  I guess I don't need one immediately, but I kind of wanted a copy for upcoming airline travel.

  • I still haven't gotten Claire's either.  FWIW, Aiden's almost 4 and we've never needed his for anything yet...

  • Get it from the county health department where your baby was born.   I know that my insurance required that I submit a copy of the birth certificate within so many days.

  • Huh, mine didn't take very long...Maybe two months to come in? And I paid extra to order it online because I was working at the same and lazy. I got two copies.

Several airlines' wesbites claim that they age-verify for children who are lap passengers, so you may need one at the airport.

  • When we added DD to our insurance, the paperwork from the hospital that she had been born was sufficient enough. I can't remember exactly what the paperwork said, but since it took a while to get the birth certificate and we needed her on our insurance immediately, it worked. So maybe that's something to look into?

We have flown with DD several times, and there have been times where the agent asked for her birth certificate.   It's definitely good to have it just in case! Big Smile

  • We got a "Registration of LIve Birth" card, but no Birth Certificate.  I ordered DD's BC when we got her a passport right around her 1st birthday!

You should also be able to get it from the county you live in. DD was born in AA county, but I went to QA county health dept to get her BC.

We needed it for health insurance and I've used it on 3 of the 4 flights to get a boarding pass for her.

  • Go get it from a county health department (you can get them from any one except Montgomery County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City regardless of where LO was born). It costs $30 instead of the $24 at the Dept. of Vital Statistics, but it's so much easier and faster!!!
