Border-line Diabetic

So I had my bloodwork done at my first appt last week, I was 8w,4d, and today they just called and told me my glucose was 107, and A1C is 6.4 Apparently these numbers are both a little elevated, however, I was not fasting when they took the tests. Now I'm worried because they said I'm qualified for borderline diabetes, which yes, diabetes runs in my family, but I am worried now. Anyone else run into this and can let me know what they're doing? I'd hate to go on any sort of meds for diabetes while preggers.

Thanks,

  • It's the A1C that is mildly elevated and has zero to do with whether or not you fasted.  The 107 is fine for a non fasting.  You can easily control that with diet and exercise at this point.  Google glycemic index and it will give you a good place to start!  Your OB may have you in to do the glucose tolerance test earlier in the pregnancy than typical because of the risk.

  • Can you ask your doctor what to do? I know there is a lot of success with certain diets.

  • If you need meds it is better to be on them.  Poorly controlled blood sugars are way more dangerous for baby.

  • While not fasting could elevate the glucose level, I don't think it impacts that A1C since that is looking at average blood sugar levels during the past 3 months.  I was pre-diabetic (fasting blood glucose levels of 103-109) prior to getting pregnant.  I just had a fasting blood glucose test done at 12w6d, and it was 90.  I'm not sure why my level decreased.  It could be because I've lost 10 pounds due to morning sickness, or it could just be from eating healthier.
