Schedule q

When did you go from a 3 hour schedule to a 4? We are currently anywhere between a 2.5 and 4 hour schedule. "resetting" the clock about everyday or so. Just wondering when it'll become more consistent  :)

Re: Schedule q

  • Ours are just starting to go to 4 hours and are 2 months. But mine are small at 7lbs now and weight and amount they eat effect sleep.

  • At 6 mo and 12 and 13 lbs, we are still eating about every 3 hrs during the day.  They still eat once, sometimes twice, overnight (they're decent sleepers otherwise, for the most part) and are hungry, so it'll be a while until we move to 4 hrs between feedings on a regular basis! (And daycare feeds infants every 3 hrs, so I don't really have a reason to work towards 4).
  • We never went to a 4 hr schedule - the 3 hr schedule just worked for us so we never saw a reason to change. Once they started STTN, they dropped the 1 am feeding first, then the 4 am feeding. After that, the 7-10-1-4-7 schedule was easy to transition to a 3 meal/2 snack schedule when they moved to solids and table food.

  • We kept the 3 hour schedule until just the last month (8 months) when on their own they moved to a 4 hour schedule and 2 naps a day.

  • Based on your sig, it looks like your babies are only 35w gestational age, which means they are probably pretty sleepy still. I'm surprised your pedi hasn't told you that they should be awakened every 3 hours to eat to make sure they gain properly. It's common for babies to sleep through their feeds until they reach their due date. Around 2-3 weeks old (so about 40w gestational age for mine) is when we found the consistent 3.5h pattern and set our feeding times based on when was convenient for us to feed them.

I know some NICUs do a 4 hour schedule but we didn't get to 4 hours until 5 months (which was more like 4 months adjusted - mine were 37w). Before that we were on a 3.5 hour rotation. As tiny as they are now, they're going to need to eat every 3ish hours round the clock but as they get bigger and older and stronger, the theory is that if you feed them frequently during the day, they'll get in their calories then and not wake as much overnight to eat.
