What is the best way to book a Disney vacation?
We have been to Disney before, it was long before we were even married. I am looking now, and for us to go with my MIL, it would be over $1100 just for three days park admission! Before tax! Yikes. Especially when I remember from last time the rides were only running 5 hours out of the day :-( We learned the hard way when we left for a few hours in the afternoon and came back around 5:00 to find the rides were shut down for the day.

The rides run all day, unless it's terrible thunder/lightning. The park with the shortest hours is animal kingdom and they are usually open like 9-5, everywhere else is open til 7 or later- usually 9. If you're staying at a Disney property u can even stay later- sometimes 12, with like 90% of rides running.
If you're booking on the disney website watch what tickets you've selected. Is the "waterparks and more" option on there? Taking it off will reduce the price, the water parks are more for big kids. Is the "park hopper" option on? If you only want to do 1 park a day it will cut your price waaaaay down. MIL books right through disney but also has recommended "southwest vacations" to ppl.
We went in late May/early june about 10 yrs ago. (Wow, can't believe it has been that long) We stayed on property and paid for single park tickets. We went to Epcot, got there when it opened, but the walk around the Lake wasn't open until 11 and the rides didn't open until noon. We left around 2 to go swimming and went back around 5 planning to do rides and stay until the evening show, but when we went to get on rides, they said they all closed at 5. We were really disappointed. We went to MGM the next day and it was the same. So we had like 3 hours to walk around the park between the last ride and the evening light shows. We were also disappointed to find that the food places in the food court at our resort closed at 9:30 even though the food court itself was open until the posted time of 10:00 just with no food. Then pizza places wouldn't deliver without a minimum $50 order.
I don't know if it was just a slow time of year or what, but we vowed to never go back. But now MIL wants to go with the kids before Ty is in school next year. So we are considering it. We've been to Orlando since but now to Disney. We really like the Floriday's resort on international drive. I totally forgot until just now, DH's company does a lot of work at Disney, I bet they get discount tickets. I am going to have to find out. But it my mean DH will have to work a day or two while we are down there.
MIL has bought park passes on ebay too and has lucked out.
That musta been some kind of fluke with the parks because we always go May or October and parks never close at 5.
I agree. I have been going since I was 5 and I always recall riding rides at night for the past 30+ years! I wouldn't not go from that one experience.
We have booked through AAA, Liberty Travel, and most recently right through the Disney 1 800 number since we got into the parks for free and had discounted room.
If you have an iPhone/smartphone, there is a Disney Parks app that tells you everything from wait times to bathrooms, so it would make it a lot easier for you.

Staying on property is best since you get the Extra Magic Hours. I've never heard of the parks closing early like that, except Animal Kingsom, and I've been many times. I would go through the Disney website and also decide if you only want to go to one park a day which will be cheaper.
