So we are moving soon - our lease is up at the end of feb, but we can move out earlier too. And we found a great apartment in a great spot. Its on the second floor which is ok but the ONLY problem is, theres only 1 staircase. Its a 2 family house and theres only one way in and out. Which kind of scares me, if there was a fire down stairs and I couldn't get us out. The realotor told me that its up to code and see checked with the town. I know my father would freak if he knew there was only one way up/down. (hes a fireman in that city we are moving to) but in the end the decision is up to me. The apartment is great... Its clean and new, new tub/ fixtures/ appliances etc. They accept dogs, there is a yard for the baby to play in, the people down stairs garden and the back is beautiful. Its right across the street from a park and a huge field.
What would you do? Move in anyway? Keep looking? I can always just buy a fire ladder. I dont know what to do! What would you guys do??
Re: renters.. or people who have rented..
We rent as well, and I know how important/ rare it is to find a rental that you love. I've never been in your particular situation, but I'm not sure I would have even thought about it. If you lived in a single family home with two+ stories, chances are there would only be one set of stairs. If those are blocked, a window is the solution. We have a fire ladder that we take with us when we move, it rolls up and fits under our bed.
So IMO, one set of stairs wouldn't be a deterrent.
We used to rent the third floor of a three family walk up so there was also only one staircase. We just made sure we had rescue ladders in each bedroom. there was also a hatch in our attic that lead to the roof just in case.
We own now and we have three floors and only one way up and one way down, if there was a fire on the second floor and we were on the third it would be the same situation as the apartment.
My college apartment only had one set of stairs. There was a little fire escape ladder attached under the window in the bigger bedroom that took you to the roof of the garage/small engine repair shop below. Of course, it was a crank out window so not sure how we would have fit but thankfully we never had to find out.
But because it had that, it was up to code. I wouldn't let just one set of stairs keep you away from an apartment you love. Just get one of those fire ladders like a couple people suggested.
